Landry Leads Cal to Comeback Win Over Longwood

Chloe Landry's Game-Winner Helps Cal Complete Second-Half Comeback

BERKELEY, Calif. – Sparked by a four-goal performance and the game-winner from sophomore midfielder Chloe Landry, Cal overcame a four-goal halftime deficit to edge Longwood women's lacrosse 13-11 Tuesday night at California Memorial Stadium

Landry, who scored a goal in the closing seconds of the first half, ignited a Cal (1-3) scoring surge of five unanswered goals that stretched into the beginning of the second half to erase the deficit and set up her game-winning goal in the 42nd minute. The performance by Landry overshadowed a career-high six goals from Madison Stair on a Longwood (3-4) squad that saw its three-game win streak snapped by the Golden Bears.

"I'm proud of our team's level of effort overall," said Longwood head coach Elaine Jones. "We battled hard all game against a tough Pac-12 team and played the best defense I've seen us play all year. Unfortunately, Cal just had a couple players we didn't quite match up with and once they got on a roll, especially off the draw, it was difficult to stop their momentum."

Stair netted four of her six goals in the first half, including a goal with nine seconds remaining in the period, to lift the Lancers to an 8-4 advantage to begin the game.  The sophomore Stair also tallied goals in the second half to help keep Longwood within striking distance of Cal.

"Offensively, Madison [Stair] had a nice game and did a great job finishing her shots today," said Jones.

At the start of the second half, the Bears fed off Landry's end-of-the-half goal to the tune of four straight scores to start the second half and take its first lead. Meredith Haggerty scored an unassisted goal 12 seconds into the period and then converted a free position shot for the first two goals. Following a game-tying goal from Eliza Christman, Landry was set up by teammate Jena Frits to give Cal an 9-8 lead.

After relinquishing the lead to the Golden Bears on Landry's third goal of the night, Stair responded with her first goal of the second half to keep the Lancers afloat and even the score 9-9 with 21 minutes left in the game. The goal marked her fifth goal of the night to surpass her previous career-high of four in a game.

Just over two minutes later, Cal captured the lead for good with a stretch of three consecutive goals started by Landry's game-clinching goal. Following the go-ahead score, Elizabeth Pellechi and Caroline Corzel each found the net to give the Golden Bears a 12-9 lead in the final 14 minutes right before a Longwood timeout.

In spite of falling behind by three goals, the Lancers put up their own fight with back-to-back goals of their own from Stair and freshman Stephanie Roberts coming out of the timeout. Longwood cut the deficit to one as senior Katie McHugh connected with Stair for her sixth goal of the night and then found Roberts to bring the score to 12-11.

With four minutes to go, Cal pushed its lead back to three goals as Landry set up Kate Mattimore and put the game in the hands of the defense to close it out. In addition to her scoring, Landry finished the night with one assist to go along with her game-high six draw controls.

"We aslo had some lapses in our execution in the second half, which gave Cal the little edge they needed to win the game," said Jones.

In spite of allowing the six-goal outburst by Stair, the Cal defense clamped down on Longwood, disrupting the Lancers into turning the ball over seven times in the second half and three times in the final eight minutes to stave off any final comeback attempts.

Longwood senior midfielder Sarah Butler, who leads the team in goals,  finished the game with one goal and four assists, snapping a five-game stretch of netting at least three goals.

Longwood will now head to Moraga, Calif., to take on the St. Mary's Gaels on Thursday, March 11. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
