STARKVILLE, Miss. – Led by a 3-for-4 performance from Micayla Sorosiak, Northwestern State earned a 2-1 win over Longwood Sunday morning in the Bulldog Slamboree at Nusz Park.
Sorosiak went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in the eventual game-winning RBI in the fifth inning.
Meanwhile, Shelly Sells (6-3) was solid in the circle for the Demons, tossing 5.0 innings and giving up one unearned run in the fifth on three hits and a pair of walks. Micaela Bouvier picked up the save, not allowing a hit in two innings of work.
Jenna Carnes received her second start of the season in the circle. She allowed three hits in 1-plus innings, leaving with the bases loaded with no out in the second inning.
Sydney Gay came on and was able to get Longwood out of the jam and keep the game scoreless. She struck out Kaytie Proctor, before getting Sidney Salmans to ground into a fielder's choice and Kellye Kincannon to line out to
Carly Adams at second base to end the threat.
"We need to take care of ourselves in our preparation to play from coaches to players," said head coach
Kathy Riley. "Our hitting must improve to take pressure off of our defense and I am responsible to get us on the right track."
Gay (3-3) was given the loss after, giving up two runs on five hits in 3.1 innings. She also struck out four batters.
Elizabeth McCarthy came on for Gay in the fifth and allowed just one hit and a walk in 2.2 innings of work.
Glenn Walters and
Justina Augustine led Longwood at the plate. Walters went 1-for-2 at the plate and recorded Longwood's lone RBI. Meanwhile, Augustine notched a double, as she finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
For the tournament, Walters led the Lancers with a .375 batting average, going 6-for-16 for the weekend while recording a team-high four RBI and scoring a pair of runs.
In the circle, McCarthy went 2-0 over the weekend, as opposing batters hit .222 against the southpaw. She added 10 strikeouts, bringing her within 15 of matching Jen Steele of second all-time on Longwood's career strikeout list.
Northwestern State (15-5) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning, as Salmans scored on a wild pitch. Two batters later with a runner on third and no out, Micayla Sorosiak singled back up the middle to bring home Kincannon.
Longwood responded by getting a run back in the bottom half of the inning. After Augustine led off with a double and advanced to third on a fielding error, she was brought home by
Glenn Walters on a sacrifice fly to center field.
"Our players understand what it takes to be a championship caliber team and that is our No. 1 goal," Riley said. "We will keep moving forward until we start playing more phases of the game well at the same time."
Up next, Longwood (9-5) prepares to take on its first top-five team of the season, as the squad travels to No. 5 LSU Tuesday with the doubleheader set to get underway at 5 p.m. ET.
