FARMVILLE, Va. – Senior
Deborah Headen tallied a career-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists, as the Longwood women's basketball team completed a season sweep of Coastal Carolina with an 84-76 victory Tuesday night inside Willett Hall.
Â
Headen, a product of Herndon, Va., enjoyed her first career 20-point night to finish in double figures for the 14th time this season and the 32nd time in her Longwood career. The senior guard hit four three-pointers, which matched her career-high, to go along with six assists and six rebounds to help the Lancers end the Chanticleers' chances of earning a No. 7 seed in the Big South Tournament.
Â
"It definitely helped us win and boosted my confidence," Headen said of her career day. "Hopefully, we can build on this heading into the tournament next week."
Â
Longwood (7-20, 4-15 BSC) captured a season sweep of the Chanticleers for the first time since joining the Big South, as the squad puts an end to its seven-game losing streak. The Lancers also downed the Chanticleers inside Willett Hall for the second straight season. Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina (11-17, 6-13 BSC) dropped its second straight game after going on a three-game win streak.
Â
"Tonight was a great team win," said head coach
Bill Reinson. "We struggled at times, but we made plays at the end. We had a lot of important contributions and it was good to get a win at home."
Â
The Lancers hit a slew of shots from beyond the arc within a three-minute span, including Headen's go-ahead bucket that put the squad up for good 58-57 with 7:32 remaining in the game. Moments later, Headen brought down a board off a missed Coastal layup which led to a
Kyndal Skersick three-pointer to stretch the lead to four.
"
Deborah Headen was outstanding," Reinson said. "She has really stepped up her game recently."
Â
Longwood ran away with the game by hitting 10 three-point baskets at home for the second time this season while draining a season-best 55 percent of its shots from deep. The Lancers also rode an advantage at the free-throw line, making a season-high 30 free throws in comparison to Coastal's 16 shots made at the charity stripe.
Â
Headen was joined in double figures by
Eboni Gilliam with 16 points, a game-high eight rebounds, while adding a blocked shot and a steal in 27 minutes. In addition,
Autumn Childress finished with 13 points, while
Kyndal Skersick added 11 and
Ciarah Bennett added 10 points.
Â
For Gilliam, it marked her 18th time this season with six-plus boards, as the junior college transfer came within two rebounds of a double-double. It marked the seventh game this season in which Gilliam finished two rebounds or less from collecting a double-double.
Â
"I just tried to do what I needed to step up and help my team and be a strong asset for the team," Gilliam said.
Â
Coastal Carolina was led by redshirt junior standout Ced Gibson's 20-points on 9-of-19 shooting. Gibson's performance marked the fourth time in the team's past five games the guard has reach 20 points or more.
"Hopefully, this will give us some momentum as we head into the conference tournament," Reinson said.
Â
With one game left on the regular season calendar, the Lancers will have the next three days to prepare to host Gardner-Webb on senior day Saturday, March 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
