CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian freshman guard Taylor Petty tallied a game-high 26 points, as the Blue Hose made 14 three-pointers en route to a 75-49 victory over visiting Longwood Monday night inside the Templeton Center.
Petty's 26 points negated a 19-point effort from Longwood freshman guard
Ciarah Bennett, as Bennett finished just one point off her season-high. Bennett was the lone Lancer to finish in double figures, as she was 6-of-14 from the floor and added 6-of-8 free throws.
Longwood (6-15, 3-9 BSC) came into the contest seeking its fourth straight regular season win in the Palmetto State dating back to last season. Meanwhile, Presbyterian (13-8, 9-3 BSC) captured its sixth victory in its last seven games to maintain its position in third-place.
A product of Camden, N.J., Bennett notched three-plus assists for the fourth time this season which is second to
Micaela Ellis' 11 games with at least three dimes. In addition to Bennett, sophomore
Autumn Childress brought down a career-best 13 rebounds to go along with her four points in 27 minutes of action.
Petty finished the night tied for second in the Presbyterian Division-I record book for most points scored in a single game. She finished one point shy of teammate Cortney Storey's 27-point effort last season against Coastal Carolina, as Petty was 6-of-9 from three-point range and 10-of-17 from the field.
A freshman from Spartanburg, S.C., Petty helped the Blue Hose hold a big advantage in bench points, outscoring Longwood 45-9, while also holding a 22-16 advantage in points in the paint.
For the Blue Hose, Petty was one of four players to finish the night in double figures. Janie Miles added four triples to finish the night with 13 points, while Salina Virola finished with 12 points and Aianna Kelly notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Presbyterian shot the ball lights out from beyond the arc throughout the contest, as the Lancers gave up a season-high 14 three-pointers. While Petty and Miles combined for 10 triples, Aianna Kelly also accounted for two triples in the opening five minutes of the game.
After Longwood took a 20-19 lead in the opening 30 seconds of the second quarter, Presbyterian rattled off a 14-0 run over the next eight minutes to take control of the game and a 34-20 lead. The Lancers gained momentum heading into the half after a
Raven Williams half court bucket at the horn made it an 11-point Presbyterian lead.
However, the Blue Hose came out and asserted itself in the second half on a 14-5 run to take a 20-point lead, 51-31, with 4:35 on the third quarter clock. From there, Longwood closed the margin to within 16 points, but that was as close as the Lancers would get the rest of the way.
Longwood makes its final trip to the Palmetto State Saturday, Feb. 6, as the Lancers face Charleston Southern. The opening tip is set for 2 p.m., inside the Buc Dome.
