FARMVILLE, Va. – Senior midfielder
Finnlay Wyatt of the Longwood men's soccer team highlighted the Lancers five all-conference selections, becoming the first Lancer to be named to the All-Big South First Team as announced Friday morning by the conference office.
Wyatt was one of five Lancers honored, as the blue and white had the most players earn postseason accolades since joining the Big South prior to the 2012 season. Wyatt was joined by
Dan Campos,
Carlos Canas and
Max Poelker to earn all-conference honors, as Campos and Canas were named to the All-Big South Second Team. Meanwhile, Poelker was named to the Big South All-Freshman team while receiving honorable mention status and
Zach Corcoran was named to the Big South All-Academic Team
After a strong campaign in which he scored five goals and added six assists, Wyatt earned his first All-Big South accolade and was honored by the league for the second time in his career after being named to the Big South All-Academic Team last season. One of three players to rank among the top-eight in the league in goals and assists, Wyatt also ranked sixth in the Big South with 16 points.
A product of Bergen, Norway, Campos received his second all-conference second team honor, the first coming back in 2014 where he was named to the all-conference second team and all-freshman team. Coming off a game in which he scored two goals and added two assists for six points in Longwood's win over Liberty Wednesday, Campos finished the regular season as the Big South's and NCAA's leader with 11 assists.
Campos and Wyatt have combined for 31 points on the season, scoring seven goals and adding 17 assists, making them a lethal midfield combination.
Meanwhile, Canas also earned his third postseason honor to go along with his all-freshman status in 2013 and second-team all-conference honor last season. Canas Finished among top-three in the league with a 1.50 goals against and 60 saves this season. In addition, he made five or more saves on five occasions, including Wednesday's senior day win over Liberty. Playing nearly 5,000 minutes in net and amassing 219 saves, Canas will go down as one of Longwood's all-time best goalkeepers in the Division I era.
Poelker paced the Lancers with his team-leading seven goals to be named Big South Honroable Mention and to the Big South All-Freshman team. The Yorktown, Va., native's seven goals ranked second in the Big South in goals among rookies this season, as he led Longwood in goals and 17 points. Poelker scored at least one goal in four of Longwood's six wins and finished among top five in goals this seaso in the Big South.
Corcoran represents the Lancers on the Big South All-Academic team, his first all-conference honor. A major in business administration, Corcoran tallied two goals in 18 games played and 11 starts.
Longwood's all-conference members will look to make another semifinal appearance as the Lancers kick-off their Big South Conference tournament with a quarterfinals matchup at UNC Asheville on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Lancers hope to avenge a 3-2 overtime loss against the Bulldogs earlier this season.
