Offensive Power Campbell Halts Surging Lancers

Big South's Top Scoring Team Breaks Through Against Shutout-Minded Lancers, 1-0

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Despite laying claim to the top scoring offense in the Big South, Campbell used a stifling defense to slow down surging Longwood and pull out a 1-0 win Wednesday evening at Eakes Complex.

Entering the game with a Big South-leading 2.19 goals per game, Campbell (10-7-0, 5-3-0 Big South) needed just one goal from Payton Ormsby to break through against a Longwood team that had surrendered only one score over the previous four games.

Orsmby, the Big South's points leader, connected on her team-leading seventh goal just 22 minutes into the game, snapping a streak of 288 consecutive scoreless minutes for Longwood goalkeeper and reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week Maria Kirby. The goal came on a long pass into the box from Callie Beckwith and stood until the final minute behind a three-save shutout from Campbell keeper Natalya Marcove.

"On a night that we were really going to have to match our opponent's energy and intensity, I thought we gave a pretty flat performance," said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer. "Give credit to Campbell for dictating the rhythm of the game and finishing their chances. We reacted too much tonight, especially defensively, and that is something we will have to correct moving forward. Our focus now is Charleston Southern at home on Saturday."

Longwood matched Campbell 12-12 in shots but put only three of those on goal, all of which Marcove dispatched en route to her fourth shutout of the season.

The loss puts the Lancers (6-9-1, 3-3-1 Big South) in need of back-to-back wins in their final two Big South games to have a chance at securing a top-four spot in the Big South standings and a home field matchup in the conference tournament quarterfinals. The Lancers remain two wins behind the top five teams in the league, including Gardner-Webb (5-2), Radford (5-3), High Point (5-1-1), Liberty (5-2) and Campbell (5-3).

The first of Longwood's final two games comes this Saturday at 2 p.m. against Charleston Southern, prior to which the Lancers will honor their groundbreaking senior class of Christina Corbin, Gina D'Orazio, Jayden Metzger, Jessica O'Bryant and Amanda Spencer for Senior Day.
