FARMVILLE, Va. – Amber Adams scored the game-winning goal five minutes into overtime to send Coastal Carolina to a 2-1 win over Longwood in a battle of Big South unbeatens Saturday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Adams' golden goal completed a comeback from a 1-0 deficit for the Chanticleers (6-4-0, 2-0-0), who tied the game in the 59th minute on a corner kick header from Ellie Taylor and then walked off on Adams' game-winner at the 5:02 mark in extra time. The win was the third straight for a Coastal Carolina team picked to finish third in the Big South Preseason Coaches Poll.
Miki Antzoulatos set up Adams for the golden goal, sending a pass to her junior counterpart on the left side of the keeper box where Adams cut her shot around Longwood goalkeeper
Maria Kirby to the lower right corner. Kirby, whose 349-minute scoreless streak snapped earlier in the game on Taylor's equalizer, rushed Adams and got fingertips on the shot, but the ball slipped past her outstretched arm and rolled inside the far post.
"That's a tough loss to swallow," said Longwood head coach
Todd Dyer. "We did a lot of good things on the day, but in some of the critical moments we weren't as sharp as we needed to be. We have to learn from this, and we have to be mentally stronger, especially late in games. We have to find a way to win games when we create those opportunities for ourselves. This will make us better, but only if we use what we learned and apply it."
Coastal Carolina's come-from-behind effort erased a second-half quick score from the Lancers (5-5-0, 1-1-0 Big South), who jumped out to a 1-0 lead 32 seconds after halftime on a goal from
Olivia Colella. That goal – which started on a high, lofting cross from
Gina D'Orazio – was the lone score for a Lancer team that outshot Coastal Carolina 19-14 and put seven shots on goal.
Longwood took 12 of those shots in the second half and forced three corner kicks, but Chanticleer goalkeeper Becca Austin responded to Colella's go-ahead goal by shutting out Longwood the rest of the way. The junior netminder registered seven saves for the game, including three after Colella's goal, to set the stage for Coastal's comeback.
The Chanticleers became only the third team in 10 games to score multiple goals against the Lancers, joining No. 5 West Virginia and No. 10 Virginia Tech. The two goals derailed a three-game scoreless streak for Kirby, who was coming off back-to-back shutouts in 1-0 wins over Richmond and High Point.
The loss snaps Longwood's two-game winning streak and levels Longwood's Big South record to 1-1. The Lancers will look to get back over .500 in conference play Wednesday with a trip to Winthrop.
