Longwood Shuts Down Top Big South Offense

Lancers Stifles Big South's Second-Leading Scoring Team, Beats Campbell 10-6

FARMVILLE, Va. – Eight unanswered goals and 10 saves from senior goalkeeper Christian Acker propelled Longwood to its first Big South win of the season, a 10-6 handling of visiting Campbell Monday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Park.

The Lancers (3-9, 1-1 Big South) spotted their Big South All-Preseason selection keeper Acker an 8-1 lead after halftime following an 8-0 run that included four goals from Katie McHugh and two from Lisa Schell. McHugh ended the day with five goals and an assist on seven shots, while Schell logged her first career multi-goal game as Longwood defeated Campbell for the fourth straight time.

9078"We've been working really hard the past few weeks, and we're so excited to finally get this first conference win in the bag," said Schell, who netted two of her three shots. "A lot of hard work has gone into getting our offense to where it is today. It's just really great that we all could work together today and pull it all together."

Schell's first goal of the day sparked the 8-0 run for Longwood, which overcame Campbell's early 1-0 lead to take a 5-1 advantage into halftime. It was the longest scoring streak of the season for the Lancers, who fired their second-most shots of the season and assisted on seven of their 10 goals. Schell, McHugh and senior Sarah Arndt provided the bulk of the scoring with Arndt adding two goals, two assists and a career-high five draw controls.

Key to Longwood's offensive explosion was back-to-back goals shortly after the start of the second half. McHugh, who scored the last goal of the first half that put the Lancers up 5-1, carried that momentum through halftime when she netted her third and fourth goals of the game within 12 seconds of each other less than two minutes into the second half.

"I think it was huge because we actually rode our momentum instead of just letting it go," Acker said. "We just did a great job of that, keeping the momentum. We got really excited and pumped up for those goals. They were beautiful goals, too. They were nicely assisted; they weren't just barreling through the defense. Everything just connected very well for us today."

9079Despite the sizable lead, the Fighting Camels kept Acker busy by sending 16 of their 19 shots on net. Acker batted away all but six of those and made six consecutive saves during Longwood's 8-0 run. That lockdown performance came against a Campbell team that entered the matchup ranked second in the league with 12.82 goals per game and the Big South's second-leading scorer, Loren Day, who managed just three goals on seven shots Monday.

"I think our defense had a lot of really good defensive stops," said Acker, whose 12.84 saves per game ranks second in the Big South. "We definitely shut down some of their key players for a while. I also think our offense had a good shooting day, and our transition went really well. We definitely connected in the midfield, doubled when we needed to double and go the ball back when we lost it."

The scoring output marked Longwood's third double-digit scoring effort in the past seven games and gives the Lancers momentum heading into a two-game road trip to the Palmetto State where matchups against Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb await this Friday and Sunday.

"We're really excited for this weekend to travel down to South Carolina, and I can't begin to express how excited we are to win this game," Schell said. "We're just really excited to get back on the road with the opportunity to win some more games and get a higher seed in the Big South Tournament."
