FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood senior
Sara Jacobson left a lasting impression on the Lancer faithful Friday evening by scoring her two of her career-high five goals inside the final 10 minutes to propel the Lancers to a 13-11 win over rival Liberty in the regular season finale at the Athletics Complex.
Â
The final three goals Longwood fans would see from their senior midfielder on her home turf proved to be the difference in a Senior Night win that saw the Lancers (6-11, 4-3 Big South) rally from a 7-5 halftime deficit by outscoring Liberty 8-5 after the break. Jacobson played a key role in that comeback, scoring two go-ahead goals in the second half, including the eventual game-winner.
Â
"Offensively, I thought we stayed composed," said head coach
Elaine Jones, who has now led Longwood to winning conference records in each of her first three seasons at Longwood. "Sara J[acobson],
Katie McHugh and Sarah A[rndt] did a nice job finishing their shots. Overall, our seniors were outstanding and I'm so glad they finished the regular season on a high note. Their dedication, passion, sense of humor and support for the team has been great all season. I've tremendously enjoyed coaching them."
Â
Jones and the Lancers honored their seven-member senior class before the game for Senior Day, and that contingent returned the favor by combining for seven goals, three assists, 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers. Jacobson produced a team-high six points, while Arndt scored twice and dished out two more assists to pad her team-leading assist total to 20.
Â
The win was Longwood's third straight against Liberty, bumping the Lancers to a perfect 3-0 against the rival Flames since joining the Big South three seasons ago.
Â
"We're so proud of our whole team," Jones said. "We had great parent and fan support to see our players compete with a high level of intensity, especially Christian [Acker], Shiloh [McKenzie] and the rest of our defense, which really helped carry us to the win."
Â
Defensively Longwood rode 12 saves from Acker and four ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers from McKenzie to turn the tables on the Flames. Liberty's final goal came with 5:38 on the clock and cut Longwood's lead to 12-11, but the Lancers kept Liberty off the board the rest of the way to finish over .500 in conference play for the second straight year.
Â
The Lancers conclude the 2015 regular season with four wins in their final six games for a 4-3 conference finish that is good enough for fifth place. The top-five finish sets the stage for Longwood to face fourth-seeded High Point in the first round of the Big South Championship Tuesday, April 28, at 6 p.m.
Â
"We're happy with this win tonight, but we'll get right back to work tomorrow to prepare for our first-round conference game Tuesday," Jones said.
