Persistent Campbell Sweeps Longwood

Brandon Delk goes 3-for-3 with an RBI in Sunday loss

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell scored in seven of eight innings to overcome a four-run Longwood lead for a 8-6 victory Sunday at Jim Perry Stadium.  The Camels knocked out a series-high 15 hits in the come-from-behind victory to sweep the Lancers.

Longwood (6-11) slugged its way to a 4-0 advantage in the top of the first thanks in part to Kyri Washington's sixth home run of the season. The 6-1, 215-pound Washington found a hanging breaking ball and promptly deposited it over the left-center wall for a two-run blast. The left fielder is now just one home run shy of his 2014 total of seven dingers.

The home run was not enough, however, as Campbell (17-2) scored in every inning except the sixth on its way to a 14th-consecutive victory. Shortstop Anthony Lopez triggered the Camels' comeback as he launched a game-tying, two-run shot over the 395' sign in center during the third inning.

The Fighting Camels would dominate the middle innings, taking a 6-4 lead while shutting down the Longwood bats. Bobby Thorson (2-1) was huge in relief for Campbell as he would hold the Lancers in check for 4 1/3 innings allowing just a single hit through the middle innings before being chased by back-to-back hits in the eighth. The right-handed reliever picked up his second win of the season for his stellar effort.

The two hits touched off a Longwood rally in the eighth as the Lancers pulled within one run after an RBI-double from Travis Biddix and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brandon Delk. After a rough day on Saturday, Delk responded with a 3-for-3 day and an RBI in the finale.

The rally fell just short for the Lancers as Campbell would push across an insurance run in the bottom half and Cole Hallum earned his fourth save to preserve the sweep for the Camels.

"I liked the way we came out offensively and chased the starter out of the game really early," said first-year head coach Ryan Mau. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to keep our foot on the gas. Thorson came in and they shut us down for six-straight until we were able to scratch again in the eighth. It just wasn't enough today and we're very disappointed we weren't able to pull it out."

Longwood came out on fire and with increased aggression on Sunday as the blue and white racked up four runs on four hits in the top of the first. After Biddix reached on an error by Campbell starting pitcher Travis Long, Washington crushed a two-run home run to left center, quickly staking a 2-0 Longwood lead. The Lancers would tack on after Delk singled and stole second before freshman Michael Osinski brought the right fielder home with a flare-single to left. A batter later, Brandon Harvell uncorked his first double of the season to plate Osinski all the way from first.

The lead began shrinking immediately, however, as Campbell pulled back a run in the bottom half thanks to an RBI-double from Lopez. The junior college transfer was three-quarters of the comeback for the Camels, blasting a no-doubt two-run bomb to center field two innings later to level the game.

In between Lopez's RBI, Campbell brought a run home in the second on a wild, rarely-seen play. Brian Taylor singled and was moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt for Drew Butler. The Camel third baseman chopped an 0-1 pitch up the middle which was cut off by a diving Osinski; with the Lancer shortstop on the ground, Taylor rounded third and headed home, sliding in safely before the throw.

The Fighting Camels finally took the lead in the fourth inning, scoring a single run aided by a Lancer error. Campbell right fielder Kyle Prats reached when his ground ball was booted with one out. The error proved costly as Steven Leonard laid down a perfect two-out bunt to the right side and beat Connar Bastaich to the bag. Prats would score from third after he stole second and advanced on a deep fly ball to left center.

The five runs through four innings led to starter Brandon Vick being chased from the game after the inning. Vick finished his day having allowed nine hits and four unearned runs while striking out four batters. The southpaw could not duplicate his strong start at Georgia a week ago and took his second loss of the season, falling to 0-2.

"I thought Brandon was just okay today," said Mau. "He really competed for us but didn't have his good stuff. We made several mistakes, some physical and some mental, and unfortunately they don't all show up in the error column. When you make those mistakes, you give away runs and you can't give away runs to a team that was 16-2 entering today. They're going to take advantage of it and make you pay."

With Thorson silencing the Longwood bats, Campbell extended its lead with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. A hit-by-pitch and balk helped the Camels to a run in the fifth while another error scored the run in the seventh.

Longwood did not go down quietly though, as the Lancers put together a rally in the top of the eighth and very nearly recaptured a lead. Center fielder Colton Konvicka bounced a high-chopper down the third-base line, beating it out for an infield single and advancing to second on a throwing error. Two pitches later, Biddix doubled off the left field wall driving in Konvicka to cut the lead to 7-5. With the double, the senior extended his hit-streak to five games and reached for the 17th-consecutive game to open the season.

Biddix' double chased Thorson from the game as Campbell turned to Coley Thompkins out of the bullpen. After Thompkins got the first out via strikeout, Bastaich singled back through the box to put Lancers on the corners. That brought up Delk who was already 3-for-3 on the day. The Longwood right fielder launched a deep drive to dead center that fell a foot short of the wall as the blue and white had to settle for a sacrifice fly, making it a 7-6 game.

"Brandon did an outstanding job today at the plate," Mau said. "He found his approach and didn't try to do too much. He's got incredible bat speed and strength, and at the end really had a chance at driving the ball out of the park late. It was just an outstanding day for him and he played some great right field as well throwing a guy out trying to stretch a single into a double. I'm really proud of the way Brandon played today."

Longwood would come no closer as Campbell pushed across an unearned insurance run in the eighth to seal the game. With a runner on first, Camel first baseman Seth LaRue singled through the left side and the ball skipped past Washington, rolling all the way to the wall and allowing the runner to score from first.

The run was the second of two unearned runs charged to Luke Simpson who provided a solid three innings of relief to finish the game for Longwood. The sophomore right-hander scattered four hits and punched out three while walking a single batter.

Simpson came in, did a good job for us and threw the ball very well," said Mau. "Unfortunately, he wasn't able to field his position on a comebacker which cost him a run and then we make a walk and a mistake in left which cost us another run. You just can't give away runs against a team that good."

Heading into a pair of midweek contests, coach Mau and the staff are looking to tidy up some of those defensive issues which led to runs this weekend.

"Our focus is on taking care of the baseball," said Mau. "We'll pay attention to detail and handling some of those situations that came up, I thought we got exposed on some things this weekend and we're going to go to work trying to clean those things up. Offensively, we came out of the gates better today, but faded a little bit in those middle innings. We just have to get back to our approach in the early counts and do a better job of battling with two strikes."

Longwood will return home on Tuesday to face Norfolk State at 3 p.m. in the first home game of the season for the blue and white. Following a Wednesday road game, Longwood will host its first Big South series of the season against Charleston Southern beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
