FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood led by as many as 11 points midway through the second half, but Presbyterian rallied to force overtime and ultimately take a 36-32 victory Saturday afternoon inside Willett Hall in the final home contest of the season for the Lancers.
The Blue Hose outscored Longwood, 6-2 in the overtime period, to move to 14-13 on the season and even their record in Big South play to 9-9. Longwood falls to 3-25 on the season and 3-16 in conference play.
The performance was the best defensive effort of the season for the Lancers, as the blue and white held Presbyterian to its fourth lowest scoring output of the season of 36 points. The 36 points also marks the lowest point total the Lancers have held an opponent this season.
Longwood forced 26 Presbyterian turnovers, which marks the second time in the last four games the squad has forced 25 or more turnovers. In addition, the Lancers limited Presbyterian to 12-of-39 (.308) from the floor and 3-of-13 (.231) from the three-point line. Â
"This was by far our best effort defensive effort of the season," said Longwood head coach
Bill Reinson. "The ladies were intense and focused. Early in the game, we missed a bunch of shots that could've extended the lead. Those missed opportunities allowed Presbyterian to stay close."
Meanwhile, the 32 points from the Lancers is the fewest for the squad since scoring just 26 points against then-No. 3 Notre Dame on Dec. 22, 2011. Longwood was limited to a season-low .235 (12-51) shooting from the floor and equaled its season-low of four three pointers, which marks the fewest treys for the Lancers inside Willett Hall.
Longwood took a 15-11 lead at the break and held Presbyterian to just a 2-of-12 (.167) from the floor. Six of Presbyterian's 11 points came from Keyonna Allen at the free-throw stripe.
Longwood came out of the locker room and went on a 7-2 run to increase its lead to 24-13 with 13:48 remaining. However, the Blue Hose utilized a 15-1 run after the Lancers took its largest lead of the night, led by the freshman pair of Courtney Storey and Janie Miles with a combined five points and four assists.
Presbyterian held Longwood without a field goal for seven minutes and 17 seconds throughout the stretch and the Blue Hose would take its second lead of the game, 28-25.
Raven Williams and
Autumn Childress combined to score the final five points of regulation for Longwood, as regulation ended with the teams knotted at 30-all.
In Longwood's second overtime game of the season, Storey scored four of Presbyterian's six points to give the Blue Hose the season sweep.
Allen was the only double figure scorer for either squad with 10 points, while Rebecca Walker and Storey each tallied seven points.
Kyndal Skersick and
Deborah Headen scored a team-high eight points in the loss for Longwood.
"Lately, it seems that our games are coming down to one or two possessions and we just haven't been able to make enough plays to win."
The game marked the 10th contest of the season for Longwood that saw the outcome decided by eight points or less. The Lancers also fell in double overtime earlier this season at UNC Asheville in a game that was decided by 11 points.
Longwood will have a week off to prepare for its final game of the regular season at Charleston Southern, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 28. The Lancers will look for the season sweep over the Buccaneers at 2 p.m.
