Coastal Carolina Denies Longwood of Season Sweep

Deborah Headen finished with a team-high 13 points

CONWAY, S.C. – AJ Jordan and Anna Vogt combined for 36 points, as Coastal Carolina earned a 75-44 victory over Longwood in a Valentine's Day matinee Saturday afternoon at The HTC Center.

Longwood entered the contest searching for the season sweep, but the Chanticleers snapped a six-game losing skid to improve to 11-14 overall and 5-11 in Big South play. Longwood falls to 3-26 on the season and 3-13 in conference play.

Jordan came into Saturday's game as the leading scorer in the conference averaging 16.4 points per game. She was held to 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting, as she tallied 12 second half points. Vogt finished one point shy of her career-high with 20 points on 8-of-10 (.800) shooting to go along with six rebounds, one assists and one steal in 30 minutes of action.

The third leading scorer for Coastal Carolina was Olivia Carlton, who tallied a career-best 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.

Following a three-pointer from Deborah Headen with 9:25 left in the first half got the Lancers within three points, 17-14, the Coastal Carolina defense held the Lancers scoreless throughout the remainder of the opening half.

"This season, our defensive energy has been fed by our offensive success," said Longwood head coach Bill Reinson. "When we make shots early, we usually defend well. We were 5-for-31 in the first half and missed some good shots. Conversely, our defense suffered. We have to be mentally tougher than that."

The Lancers closed the half 0-for-13 from the floor while the Chanticleers used a 22-0 run to extend its advantage to 39-14 at the break. The 14 points in the opening half matched a season low in first half points.

Longwood – the top three point shooting team in the Big South with 6.71 three pointers per game – was held to just five three point field goals. The five treys was the fewest since UNC Asheville held the Lancers to four triples Dec. 14 inside Willett Hall.

Headen scored in double figures for the 16th time this season, as the junior led the Lancers with 13 points and was 5-of-12 from the field. Raven Williams closed the afternoon with eight points and added five rebounds, two assists and three steals.

The game against Coastal Carolina marked the final contest of a stretch of four straight games on the road. Longwood will host Liberty Tuesday, Feb. 17 inside Willett Hall. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip.
