MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
West Virginia guard Bria Holmes finished with a game-high 19 points, as West Virginia used an early run en route to a 74-43 win over Longwood Wednesday night at the WVU Coliseum.

Holmes was one of three Mountaineers to finish the game in double figures, as Teana Muldrow finished with 14 points and Lanay Montgomery finished with 10 points to go along with eight boards.

Coming into the game ranked second in the Big 12 with 18.0 points per game, Holmes tallied 13 of her 19 points in the first half of play on 6-of-9 shooting.

West Virginia (8-2), who won their sixth straight game with Wednesday's victory, opened the game on a 17-2 run over the first 4:58 of the contest, as Longwood started the game 1-of-8 from the field. The Lancers were limited to seven first quarter points on two made field goals.

The Mountaineers entered the contest boasting the nation's eighth-best field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to just a 32.5 shooting percentage on the season. They would use their defense to hold Longwood to 11 field goals in the game and a 20.8 shooting percentage.

Meanwhile, the Lancer defense was able to hold its own on the defensive end of the floor, holding West Virginia to 3-of-20 (15.0) shooting from beyond the arc.

"This is a game we can build upon," said Longwood head coach Bill Reinson. "West Virginia is a very talented team. We started slowly, but once we got it going, we played well."

The Lancers drew and held the margin to 13 points midway through the second quarter, before West Virginia closed the quarter on a 13-6 run to take a 39-19 lead to the locker room

Longwood (2-7) was led by redshirt-junior Daeisha Brown, who finished with 14 points while posting a 10-of-10 performance from the free-throw stripe. Kemari Jones, who was named Big South Freshman of the Week Monday, led the Lancers for the second straight game with six boards.

The game for Brown marked her fourth of the season in double figures, including four of the past six games. The Richmond, Va., product, who missed the final 27 games of the 2014-15 season with a torn ACL, is averaging 10.3 points per contest during that stretch.

Wednesday's game marked the third of the season in which the Lancers played a school from a power-five conference, as the squad faced No. 7 Oregon St. and Virginia earlier in the campaign.

"The ladies competed until the end," Reinson said. "I'm looking forward to the next few weeks."

Up next, the Lancers host Notre Dame College (Md.) Sunday, Dec. 20. The opening tip is set for 2 p.m., inside Willett Hall where admission will be free for the general public.
