BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's Kiera Gaines and Summer Leverette combined to score 32 points, as the Camels defeated visiting Longwood (3-18, 3-9), 68-56, Saturday afternoon inside the Pope Convocation Center.
Leverette poured in a career-high 21 points on 7-of-14 from the floor, while Gaines notched a double-double with 11 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Their collective effort was enough to withstand three Lancers in double figures led by
Raven Williams with 17 points.
Kyndal Skersick added 15 points, while
Deborah Headen scored 11 points in 30 minutes.
The 17 points for Williams combined with her eight rebounds nearly gave the junior standout her second double-double in the past three games, while Skersick scored in double figures for the seventh straight game.
"On the bright side, we battled for 40 minutes," said head coach
Bill Reinson. "We had a few opportunities to roll over, but we stayed strong. We started slow, but kept it close. We just weren't able to get the lead."
Gaines was stellar on both ends of the floor for Campbell, as she filled the stat sheet to the tune of 11 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and one steal. She became Campbell's all-time leader in blocked shots during the opening, passing former Lady Camel Felicia Autry with 97 career blocks.
The 5-7 Leverette took over in the second half for the Camels with her sharp-shooting ability where she scored 17 of her game-high 21 points. She finished the half 5-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
After the two teams went to the half with Campbell clinging to a 34-26 advantage, Longwood was able to cut the Campbell lead to five points on two separate occasions in the second 20 minutes, but was unable to draw any closer.
Skersick and Williams fueled a 6-0 run at the beginning of the second half for Longwood to cut Campbell's lead to 39-34, but the Camels responded with a pair of key triples from Leverette.
One of two three-pointers from Skersick cut Campbell's lead to five points once again, 54-49, with just under the five minute mark in the contest. However, the Camels responded with an 8-0 run led by Summer Price – who finished the afternoon with six points.
Campbell was able to put away the game at the charity stripe where the Camels hit all six of their free throws inside the one minute mark of the game. For the game, Campbell hit 19-of-22 (.864) of their free throws marking the Camels' top performance this season at the charity stripe.
The Lancers will look to regroup quickly, as the squad will play three games in six days beginning Monday, Feb. 2 inside Willett Hall against High Point. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip.
"We have a tough one at home against High Point on Monday," Reinson said. "I hope we come out with the same energy we did against Winthrop the other night."
