Radford Uses Early Run in Win Over Longwood

Micaela Ellis finishes with a career-high 11 points, while Kyndal Skersick posts 19 for Lancers

FARMVILLE, Va. – Radford utilized freshman forwards Janayla White and Jayda Worthy early and often against under-sized Longwood, as the Highlanders posted a 78-60 victory Saturday afternoon inside Willett Hall.

White and Worthy each posted a double-double for Radford, with White dominating play in the first half and Worthy taking over in the second half. In the opening stanza, White posted 10 points and nine rebounds. She finished the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, Worthy posted 11 points and 10 rebounds in the second half and finished with a game-high 16 points and 13 rebounds.

With the win, Radford wins its fourth straight game – the longest streak for the Highlanders since January 2013 – and equals the seven wins that it posted a season ago. The Highlanders improve to 7-8 on the season and 4-2 in the Big South, while the Lancers fall to 2-13 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Radford raced out of the gate to a 23-4 lead in the opening 7:46 of the game and the Lancers could never fully recover. White and Worthy helped fuel the run, as the pair of post players combined for 10 of Radford's 23 points.

"Radford came out with more energy," said head coach Bill Reinson. "They played very well early, we were very passive and could never catch up. The credit goes to them. They played much harder out of the gate."

Playing without the services of Emily Nylen – who was battling an illness – Longwood struggled guarding the size of the Highlanders. Radford held a 42-18 advantage in the paint and a 43-26 advantage on the boards. White and Worthy combined to score 24 points in the paint for the Highlanders and brought down a combined 24 rebounds.

For Longwood, Micaela Ellis finished with a season-high 11 points and posted two assists. The game marked the first time in her career that Ellis finished in double figures.

"I just knew that I had to step up once Raven [Williams] got into foul trouble, so I just tried to contribute anyway I could," Ellis said.

Kyndal Skersick and Deborah Headen each posted their second straight game in double figures. Skersick finished with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while Headen finished with 10 points.

Raven Williams saw her streak of eight straight games with 16 or more points come to an end, as the junior was unable to find a rhythm with foul trouble throughout and finished the game with four points.

Longwood would close the lead to 14 points one minute into the second half, but couldn't draw any closer.

"Currently, we have two personalities," Reinson said. "When we play aggressively, good things happen. When we're passive, they don't. Obviously, today was the latter."

The Lancers will look to regroup, as the squad will play its next two games on the road. Longwood will make the short trip to Liberty on Tuesday, Jan. 13, with the game set to get underway at 7 p.m., at the Vines Center.
