RICHMOND, VA. -- The Longwood University women's tennis team fell, 5-2, at the University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Saturday afternoon in Richmond. Junior
Malin Allgurin/Värnamo, Sweden picked up a point for the Lancers at the No. 1 singles position, while Allgurin and senior
Sarah Moomau/Winchester combined for a victory at the top doubles spot, as well, while senior
Bethany Law/Ona, West Virginia and freshman
Mason Thomas/Buchanan Dam, Texas earned win at No. 3 doubles. Longwood will play again at the United States Naval Academy on February 8 at 9 a.m. in Annapolis, Maryland.
"The match was intended to be played inside, but once it was moved outside, because the weather was warm enough, I felt it definitely gave us some confidence, since we do most of our playing and practicing outdoors," said first-year Longwood head coach
Casey Wharton. "We came out strong in doubles, and won the doubles point, against a really good team. We were a little caught off guard at the start of singles, because the new rules don't allow for a warm-up … and we just weren't ready for that. But as the singles matches progressed, we battled, and battled until the end.Â
Malin Allgurin had a brilliant win at number one, against a great player.  She played one of the best matches I have seen her play. I was very proud of all the girls. And we are all ready for Monday, to get back to work to get ready for Navy next weekend!"
Allgurin defeated her opponent, Melissa Kandinata, 6-3, 6-4 to earn a point for the Lancers at No. 1. Also in singles action, freshman
Paloma Alatorre/Katy, Texas fell 0-6, 1-6 at No. 2, while Moomau was defeated at No. 3 (0-6, 4-6) and freshman
Anna Pelak/McLean lost at No. 4 (2-6, 3-6). Thomas (2-6, 5-7) and Law (2-6, 1-6) rounded out the singles decisions for Longwood at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
In doubles play, the duo of Allgurin and Moomau defeated Kandinata and Brittany Boys, 6-4, at No. 1, Alatorre and Pelak lost 2-6 at No. 2, but the team of Law and Thomas picked up a win at No. 3 (6-4) for the doubles' point.
