CONWAY, S.C. – Longwood fell behind early Saturday and had no answer for the Coastal Carolina onslaught, falling 7-0 in the regular season finale at CCU Soccer Stadium.
The loss locks up Longwood as the No. 7 seed in the Big South Tournament and pits the Lancers in a quick rematch against Coastal Carolina Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Coastal opened the scoring with a penalty kick at the 11-minute mark by Ricky Garbanzo. Garbanzo would score twice more, completing his hat trick by bending a corner kick into the net four minutes before the half. The Lancers managed only three shots in the first half and only one was on target as
Fredrik Rahm's shot was saved.
"This turned out to be a game that was just beyond us on Coastal's form," head coach
Jon Atkinson said. "Coastal was terrific today and shot lights out, showing the level where we need to be. Our focus now shifts to the Big South Tournament and the chance to regroup and put together a meaningful run."
Coastal Carolina came out firing in their season finale, pumping 28 shots and 12 corner kicks at the Lancers. Starting goalkeeper
Carlos Canas made seven first-half saves before being relieved by
Carl Carpenter. Carpenter would allow four goals in the second half to push the final score to 7-0.
The Lancers managed to contain Coastal for the first 25 minutes of the second half before being overwhelmed once again. The Chanticleers scored their four second-half goals in a 15-minute stretch, including the final three in a four-minute span.
The Lancers will get a shot at redemption Tuesday in Conway, as Longwood and second-seeded Coastal will face off again in the quarterfinals.
Game time is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
