Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina ended No. 7 seed Longwood's season with a 2-1 victory in the Big South quarterfinals Tuesday night at CCU Soccer Stadium and will move on to the Big South Tournament semifinals Wednesday against No. 3 High Point.
The Chanticleers (13-5-1, 7-1-1 Big South) punched in two goals at the end of the first half and fought off a second-half charge from the Lancers to advance in their pursuit of the program's second straight Big South title and third consecutive championship game appearance.
"It is always hard to end a season, but I am immensely proud of the effort and the way the lads pushed Coastal all the way," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson, who completes his 12th year heading the Lancer program. "There were moments in the second half when we were looking like we could cause the upset. Coastal is a classy team. You can see why they are ranked, and our boys will be tight in the morning, but we have plenty of time now to regroup and figure out how to fill the holes left by our two warriors, Johnny [Kukapa] and Anthony [Ugorji], who have given four years of great service to this program."
Coastal Carolina bottled up the Longwood senior duo of Kukapa and Ugorji, who combined for six goals in their final season together. The Chanticleers allowed just three shots on the night while pounding 16 of their own.
Coastal Carolina forward Ricky Garbanzo, who was named Big South Attacking Player of the Year earlier in the day, scored the game-winner in the 40th minute for his team-leading eighth goal of the year. His goal followed the initial go-ahead score from teammate Sergio Camargo, who hooked up with Big South Defensive Player of the Year for a one-timer in front of the net in the 35th minute.
Longwood (4-14-1, 3-6-0 Big South) managed to cut into Coastal Carolina's lead in the 66th minute when sophomore
Nnamdi Ikeazor fielded a pass from All-Big South midfielder
Dan Campos from the top of the box and fired it past Chanticleers keeper Devin Cook-Perales to cut the score to 2-1. It was the third goal of the season for Ikeazor and the team-leading seventh assist for Campos. Campos, who also received Big South All-Freshman honors Tuesday, capped his inaugural season at Longwood by dishing out four assists over his final three games.
The loss ends the 2014 campaign for the Lancers, who will return all but Kukapa and Ugorji next year in what will be the program's fourth year as a member of the Big South Conference.
"We are thankful for being allowed to represent a great school and department," Atkinson said. "We aim to be challenging for championships in the not-too-distance future."
