Box Score | Season StatsGAINESVILLE, Fla. – Longwood faced its first 2014 NCAA Tournament qualifier of the season, as the Lancers continued their tough opening stretch to start the season that includes eight of the first 10 games on the road and five of those opponents against teams from power five conferences.
The Longwood women's basketball team played their second consecutive team from a power conference, as the squad fell by a final score of 91-46 to University of Florida on Monday afternoon at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. The Lancers fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Gators improve to 2-0.
"We had some issues with our point guards today," said head coach
Bill Reinson. "I think they struggled with Florida's pressure. They see big players, athletic players and all of a sudden they think there's pressure when there's really not.
"Today, we only gave up eight offensive rebounds, but credit goes to Florida because they didn't miss many shots."
A native of Richmond, Va.,
Daeisha Brown led the Lancers with 17 points on 8-of-14 from the floor, while Orlando, Fla.,
Kyndal Skersick scored 10 points for the second straight game.
Treasure Avery,
Brenna Robbins and
Khalilah Ali added five points each, while Ali led the Lancers with six rebounds.
"
Daeisha Brown is our go-to player and I thought she played terrific today," Reinson said. "We're trying to take her off the ball a little more and that's a work in progress for us. We have to have other people step up."
The Gators were led in scoring by Ronnie Williams, who had a game-high 19 points.
Longwood opened the game with a 10-8 lead and were paced by freshman
Treasure Avery and
Khalilah Ali with three points each. However, Brown picked up two early fouls and Florida went on a 16-2 run over a span of 2:58 to take a 24-12 advantage with 9:37 remaining.
Florida took a 43-19 lead to the halftime locker room. Brown led the Lancers with eight first-half points and four rebounds, while Williams led the Gators with 17 first-half points.
The Lancers outscored the Gators, 9-8, in the first 5:52 of the second half and Skersick scored nine of her 10 points in the half, but Florida ultimately pulled away for the 91-46 win.
