Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Longwood Overrun by Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Longwood never got it going offensively in a 5-0 loss to Penn Sunday at Ellen Vagelos Field.

Longwood (6-10) faced continued pressure all-day from the Quakers and despite holding up well early in the first half, the Lancers were finally overwhelmed. Penn opened the scoring in the 26th minute after Longwood keeper Lauren Bernard had stymied Penn with four saves.

Even at that point, the Lancers were by no means out of the game. Trailing 1-0, Longwood was able to settle down a bit, but a late corner sent the effort crashing down. Penn was awarded a corner at the 34:57 mark, just three seconds before the break. The Quakers finished the chance as time expired to take a 2-0 halftime lead.

Penn controlled the game all day long, outshooting Longwood 18-3 while holding an 11-1 advantage in corners. Longwood did not muster its first shot until the 43rd minute, but Lil-Sophie Achterwinter's attempt off the only Lancer corner was blocked. Longwood's first and only shot on goal came with under six minutes to play, as Edel Nyland sent a shot towards cage, but Penn keeper Allison Weisenfels was up to task.

Penn added three goals in the second half to pull away, including a pair of late goals to push the final margin to 5-0.

Longwood will look to bounce back next Sunday, Oct. 26 against Mid-American Conference foe Kent State. The Lancers face a must-win situation if they are to make the MAC Championships.
