Longwood Turns In Dominant 3-0 Victory

Lancers allow just one shot on goal in Davidson victory

FARMVILLE, Va. – A pair of goals from Jennifer Burris and a dominant defensive performance propelled Longwood past former NorPac rival Davidson 3-0, Monday afternoon at the Athletics Complex.

"It's nice to get a win against our former NorPac rival," said head coach Iain Byers. "There were some good parts to the game for us, a bit of scrappy play at times, but to come out on top 3-0, and keeping a clean sheet is something we've been striving for. We're proud of the progress."

Longwood turned in one of its best defensive games of the year, holding the Wildcats to only one shot on goal for 70 minutes. The Lancers only allowed six shots all-together and outshot Davidson 17-6. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Bernard made the save on the only shot she faced, turning away Paige Albert and earning her third shutout of the season.

The Lancers broke open what started as a slow game in the 26th minute when Hollie MacDonald dribbled into the left side of the circle and fired a shot high and to the left corner for her fifth goal of the season. Longwood would take the 1-0 lead into the break, before pouring on the attack in the second half.

The Lancers came out in the second period with a vengeance. Longwood outshot Davidson 12-4 over the back 35. It didn't take long for the blue and white to extend its lead as Jessica Diaz slotted a pass into the middle for Jennifer Burris who finished into the lower, left corner. The 2-0 advantage would hold for 27 minutes before Burris notched her second goal of the game.

Burris entered the circle along the left endline; the junior slung the ball toward the middle of the circle and a fortuitous bounce sent the shot up-and-over the keeper for the goal.
The 3-0 victory was satisfying for the Lancers and marked a good start to the final stretch. For Longwood, it's all about moving forward and finishing strong.

"We've got to keep the progress going," Byers said. "We have four games left and the plan is to win all four."

Longwood returns to action Friday, October 17 at 7 p.m. for senior day versus MAC opponent Ball State.
