LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University will play its first Big South Conference men's basketball game of the season at fellow North Division opponent and in-state rival VMI on Wednesday night, January 8 at 7 p.m. at Cameron Hall in Lexington. The game between the Lancers (5-10, 0-0 Big South) and the Keydets (7-6, 0-0 Big South) can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM or via the Internet at
wvhl.net, while also video-streamed live on the Internet at
bigsouthsports.com.
The Game
Longwood (5-10) continues its first season of the
Jayson Gee Era on Wednesday at 7 p.m., as the Lancers play their Big South Conference opener, and the fourth of a four-game road swing, at fellow North Division opponent and in-state rival VMI (7-6) in Lexington. Gee, a former associate head coach at Cleveland State for the past seven seasons, was appointed at Longwood on April 3, 2013. A veteran with 24 years of collegiate coaching experience, he helped the Vikings to four postseason appearances, including one NCAA Tournament and three NIT bids.
The Series
Longwood and VMI are meeting for the ninth time in the sport, as the Keydets won each of the three meetings between the two schools last season to lead the overall series, 6-2. The Lancers are 1-2 in games played at VMI, including a 54-49 road win in the first contest of the series on November 20, 1982. The Keydets took last year's games by scores of 93-60 in Farmville on February 2, 2013, 94-80 in Lexington on March 2 and 90-86 in Conway, South Carolina on March 7 in a Big South Championship Quarterfinal. Longwood is 0-1 in Big South openers, having lost at home to Coastal Carolina, 80-72, on January 5, 2013.
The Keydets
VMI is 7-6 overall, 0-0 in the Big South Conference after a 128-54 home win past non-Division I Washington College on Jan. 4. Duggar Baucom is in his ninth year as head coach of the Keydets. VMI is expected to start freshman QJ Peterson (19.8 points, 31 3FGs), seniors Rodney Glasgow (16.3 points, 4.9 assists, 36 3 3FGs) and D.J. Covington (16.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.8 blocks), redshirt-sophomore Jordan Weethee (9.2 points) and freshman Trey Chapman (5.6 points). The Keydets are shooting 43% (414-955) from the field, including 32% (127-400) on three-pointers and 70% (207-294) at the line.
The Lancers
Longwood is 5-10 overall, 0-0 in the Big South after a 126-52 road loss at Louisiana Tech University of Conference USA on Jan. 4. The Lancers are expected to start senior captain
Tristan Carey (17.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 41 3FGs), sophomore
Karl Ziegler (12.8 points, 5.6 rebounds), sophomore captain
Lucas Woodhouse (9.8 points, 6.8 assists), sophomore transfer
Leron Fisher (7.3 points) and senior
Jeff Havenstein (1.9 points). The team's third-leading scorer, redshirt-junior captain
Jeylani Dublin (11.6 points), has played off the bench this season. Longwood is shooting 45% (375-832) from the field, including 36% (78-219) on three-pointers and 73% (236-323) at the line.
It's An Unkind Road
Longwood has traveled to 34 different states and Washington, D.C. while playing 176 games away from Farmville since first playing a Division I schedule in 2004-05, including 149 true road games and 27 neutral-site games. The Lancers are 16-133 in the true road games and 8-19 in the neutral-site games ... the overall record away from Farmville is 24- 152. Longwood has 17 games on the schedule away from Farmville this season, including one new state (Louisiana). The Lancers are 1-8 away from home this year, including 1-6 in true road games and 0-2 in neutral-site games. Longwood was 2-6 in Big South road games last season.
