Longwood Hosting Gardner-Webb On Wednesday Night

FARMVILLE, Va. --
Longwood University carries a two-game winning streak into its Big South Conference men's basketball contest against Gardner-Webb University at Willett Hall on Wednesday night, January 29 at 7 p.m. in Farmville.  The game between the Lancers and the visiting Runnin' Bulldogs can be viewed exclusively on the Big SouthNetwork, and can also be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM or via the Internet at wvhl.net.

The Game
Longwood (7-14, 2-4) continues its first season of the Gee Era on Wednesday at 7 p.m., as the Lancers play host to Big South Conference South Division opponent Gardner-Webb (10-11, 3-3).  Jayson Gee, a former associate head coach at Cleveland State for the past seven seasons, was appointed at Longwood on April 3, 2013.

The Series
Longwood and Gardner-Webb have met nine times since 1990, but only two times (1-1) as Division I members, and the Lancers lead the overall series, 5-4.  The Runnin' Bulldogs won last season in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, 76-65, on February 2, as Jerome Hill and Jarvis Davis each scored 13 points … among G-WU's top returning scorers in that game.  Jeylani Dublin had 14 points and Tristan Carey had 13 points … among Longwood's top returning scorers in that contest.  The Lancers won the first Division I meeting between the two schools in Farmville, 85-84, on November 18, 2008 … getting a free throw from Ryan Bogan with only 5.9 seconds remaining.

The Lancers
Longwood is 7-14 overall, 2-4 in the Big South after an 88-85 road win at Charleston Southern on Jan. 25.  The Lancers are expected to start senior Tristan Carey (18.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 65 3FGs), sophomores Karl Ziegler (13.2 points, 5.3 rebounds), Lucas Woodhouse (11.2 points, 7.5 assists) and Leron Fisher (7.5 points), and senior Jeff Havenstein (1.9 points).  Redshirt-junior Jeylani Dublin (10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds) will play off the bench.  Longwood is shooting 46% (541-1188) from the field, fifth in the Big South, including 37% (122-327) on three-pointers (fourth) and 73% (307-418) at the line, which ranks second in the conference.

The Runnin' Bulldogs
Gardner-Webb is 10-11 overall, 3-3 in the Big South after a 66-48 home win past Campbell on Jan. 25.  Tim Craft is in his first year as head coach of the Runnin' Bulldogs.  G-WU is expected to start senior Naji Hibbert (13.2 points, 41 3FGs), freshman Jerome Hill (12.5 points, 7.2 rebounds), juniors Donta Harper (10.3 points) and Tyler Strange (8.4 points, 5.7 assists), and senior Mike Byron (3.0 points.  The Runnin' Bulldogs shoot 45% (515-1134) from the field, including 32% (104-323) on three-pointers and 67% (353-525) at the line.

Who's Hot?
Carey, averaging 20.3 points and 6.5 rebounds with 24 three-point field goals (4.0) in the first six Big South games … he has reached double-figure scoring in 17 of 20 games, and has 11 games of 20 or more points, including a season-high of 37 at Charleston Southern (1/25) … Carey now totals 1,298 career points (10th all-time) in 84 games (15.5) … Woodhouse, averaging 14.8 points (14-29 3FGs, 13-14 FTs) and 9.3 assists in the first six Big South games  … he has seven games with 10 or more assists, and has reached double-figure scoring in 12 of 21 games … Woodhouse has two game-winning three-point field goals this season (at TCU, 11/12/13; vs. Liberty (1/22/14) … he is this week's College Sports Madness Big South Player of the Week … Ziegler, averaging 14.3 points in the first six Big South games (36-61 FGs) … he has reached double-figure scoring in 17 of 21 games … Dublin, averaging 8.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in the first six Big South games (24-46 FGs) … he has reached double-figure scoring in 11 of 21 games.
