Longwood Welcomes Liberty On Wednesday Night

FARMVILLE, Va. --
Longwood University will welcome fellow Big South Conference North Division men's basketball opponent and archrival Liberty University to Willett Hall on Wednesday night, January 22 at 7 p.m. in Farmville.  The game between the Lancers and the Flames can be viewed exclusively on the Big SouthNetwork, and can also be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM or via the Internet at wvhl.net.

The Game
Longwood (5-14, 0-4) continues its first season of the Gee Era on Wednesday at 7 p.m., as the Lancers host in-state archrival and fellow Big South Conference North Division opponent Liberty (8-11, 2-2).  Jayson Gee, a former associate head coach at Cleveland State for the past seven seasons, was appointed at Longwood on April 3, 2013.

The Series
Longwood and Liberty have met 27 times since 1977-78, and the Lancers lead the series, 18-9, including 13-1 in games played in Farmville and 12-0 in games played in Willett Hall.  The Flames only win against Longwood in Farmville was back on January 15, 1978 in a game played in French Gym (84-72).  Liberty won at home last season, 74-47, on Jan. 22, while the Lancers also won at home last year, 102-101, on February 19.  John Caleb Sanders had 20 points in the Flames win, while Tristan Carey had 40 points in the Longwood win, which saw the two teams combine to score 118 points in the second half; 61 combined points over the final 4:54, 55 in the last 3:46 and 34 over the final 1:54.

The Lancers
Longwood is 5-14 overall, 0-4 in the Big South after a 93-76 road loss at Radford on Jan. 18.  The Lancers are expected to start senior Tristan Carey (17.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 57 3FGs), sophomores Karl Ziegler (13.1 points, 5.4 rebounds), Lucas Woodhouse (10.3 points, 7.6 assists) and Leron Fisher (7.6 points), and senior Jeff Havenstein (2.1 points). Redshirt-junior Jeylani Dublin (10.9 points, 4.5 rebounds) will play off the bench.  Longwood is shooting 45% (481-1070) from the field, including 36% (105-290) on three-pointers and 73% (287-395) at the line.

The Flames
Liberty is 8-11 overall, 2-2 in the Big South after a 76-70 home loss to High Point on Jan. 18.  Dale Layer is in his fifth year as head coach of the Flames.  Liberty is expected to start seniors John Caleb Sanders (11.9 points, 4.3 assists) and Davon Marshall (11.2 points, 44 3FGs), juniors Tomasz Gielo (10.6 points, 5.4 rebounds) and Andrew Smith (6.7 points), and senior JR Coronado (5.4 points, 6.4 rebounds).  Redshirt-senior Antwan Burrus (12.1 points, 5.2 rebounds) could find his way into the lineup.  The Flames are shooting 47% (486-1036) from the field, including 38% (113-299) on three-pointers and 70% (271-389) at the line.

Who's Hot?
Carey, averaging 19.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.0 three-point field goals (16) in the first four Big South games … he has reached double-figure scoring in 16 of 18 games, and has 10 games of 20 or more points … Carey surpassed 1,000 career points against Brown on Nov. 22, and now totals 1,254 career points (T-10th all-time) in 82 games (15.3) … Woodhouse, averaging 12.3 points and 10.5 assists in the first four Big South games  … he has 11 games with seven or more assists, including six games with 10 or more assists … Woodhouse has reached double-figure scoring in 10 of 19 games … Ziegler, averaging 14.0 points in the first four Big South games (23-38 FGs) … he has reached double-figure scoring in 15 of 19 games … Fisher, averaging 8.8 points in the first four Big South games (10-13 FTs) … he has reached double-figure scoring in seven of 19 games … Dublin, averaging 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in the first four Big South games (18.6 minutes, off the bench) … he has reached double-figure scoring in 10 of 19 games.
