HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Longwood University will play a Big South Conference men's basketball road game at fellow North Division opponent High Point University on Wednesday night, January 15 at 7 p.m. in North Carolina. The game between the Lancers (5-12, 0-2 Big South) and the Panthers (4-11, 0-2 Big South) can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM or via the Internet at wvhl.net, while also video-streamed live on the Internet at bigsouthsports.com.
The Game
Longwood (5-12, 0-2) continues its first season of the Jayson Gee Era on Wednesday at 7 p.m., as the Lancers play at fellow Big South Conference North Division opponent High Point (4-11, 0-2) in High Point, North Carolina. Gee, a former associate head coach at Cleveland State for the past seven seasons, was appointed at Longwood on April 3, 2013. A veteran with 24 years of college coaching experience, he helped the Vikings to four postseason appearances, including one NCAA Tournament and three NIT bids.
The Series
Longwood and High Point are meeting for the 22nd time in the sport since 1984-85, but only for the sixth time as Division I programs (1-4), and the Panthers lead the overall series, 15-6. High Point swept both games last season, winning 88-60 in North Carolina on January 30, while the Panthers took an 82-53 win in Farmville on February 13. The Lancers last victory against High Point was a 70-66 come-from-behind win in Virginia on Feb. 2, 2010, while Longwood's only win at High Point was a 58-57 road triumph on Jan. 11, 1993.
The Panthers
High Point is 4-11 overall, 0-2 in the Big South after an 81-72 home loss to Radford University on Jan. 10, a game televised nationally on ESPNU. Scott Cherry is in his fifth year as head coach of the Panthers. High Point is expected to start redshirt-sophomore John Brown (18.1 points, 7.7 rebounds), sophomores Adam Weary (11.8 points) and Lorenzo Cugini (7.5 points), along with seniors Dejuan McGaughy (5.4 points, 2.6 assists) and Derrell Edwards (3.5 points). The Panthers are shooting 46% (375-819) from the field, including 31% (66-214) on three-pointers and 71% (204-286) at the line.
The Lancers
Longwood is 5-12 overall, 0-2 in the Big South after a 75-67 home loss to Campbell on Jan. 11. The Lancers are expected to start senior Tristan Carey (17.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 49 3FGs), sophomore Karl Ziegler (13.1 points, 5.6 rebounds), sophomore Lucas Woodhouse (9.8 points, 7.2 assists), freshman Damarion Geter (2.1 points) and senior Jeff Havenstein (1.8 points). Redshirt-junior Jeylani Dublin (11.2 points, 4.5 rebounds) has played off the bench this season. Longwood is shooting 45% (424-953) from the field, including 34% (88-257) on three-pointers and 74% (267-362) at the line.
