BUENA VISTA, Va. -- Junior Brittany Foote/Goshen, New York ran a 5K time of 21:00, and classmate Elisabeth Drake/Hayes posted a time of 22:09, to lead Longwood University to 278 points in women's cross country on Saturday morning and a ninth-place finish among 10 teams at the VMI Invitational in Buena Vista. Coastal Carolina University won the race, serving as a Big South Preview, with its 43 points. The Chanticleers placed four runners among the top 10, including race winner Letitia Saayman (18:18) at the Vista Links Golf Course, which will also host the Big South Conference Championship on November 2. Longwood will next participate in the prestigious Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on October 5 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Foote finished 46th overall among the 94 runners, while Drake placed 65th over the 3.1 mile event. They were followed by freshman Gracie Piekarski/South Plainfield, N.J. (22:31, 70th), sophomore Emily Krause/Fredericksburg (23:40, 84th) and senior Emberli McGann/Stuarts Draft (24:41, 86th) to round out the scoring positions. Juniors Kristen Blackstock/Lynch Station (25:04, 88th) and Elaine Scerbo/Lottsburg (27:55, 93rd), along with freshman Hannah Fielder/Alexandria (30:34, 94th) also ran for the Lancers.
Coastal Carolina was followed by Liberty (53), High Point (63), Campbell (94), UNC Asheville (139), VMI (174), Radford (182), Charleston Southern (213), Longwood (278) and Tusculum (300).
