Longwood Defeats Morgan State 4-0



LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Longwood University took a 4-0 non-conference women's tennis victory past Morgan State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Saturday in Lynchburg.  Senior Hannah Hill/Portsmouth and sophomore Malin Allgurin/Varnamo, Sweden each earned wins in singles for the Lancers (2-4) against the Bears (1-9).  Longwood will next play at Elon University of the Southern Conference on March 1 at 2 p.m. in Elon, North Carolina.

Against Morgan State in the match-opening doubles competition, seniors Marta Pinyol/Barcelona, Spain and Allison Shulman/Richmond fell at No. 1, 8-9.  Allgurin and junior Sarah Moomau/Winchester won at No. 2, 9-8.  Hill and junior Nicole Parker/Richmond won at No. 3, by default.  In singles, Allgurin won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0.  Hill won at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0.  Parker won at No. 6, by default.  Pinyol did not finish at No. 1, trailing 3-5.  Shulman did not finish at No. 2, trailing 1-6, 2-1.  Moomau did not finish at No. 4, trailing 1-6, 2-1.

“The girls definitely came out ready for a battle,” said second-year head coach Jakob Gustafsson.  “The doubles point was crucial for the win.  We played really well on all courts and were able to win one out of two tie-breaks.  In singles, Hannah and Malin led the way with two convincing wins to clinch the match for us.  We are definitely starting to gain some momentum as we head into some Big South matches.”
