Longwood Falls Short at Campbell, 62-51

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Longwood University women's basketball team trailed by just one with less than 14 minutes remaining in the contest before suffering a 62-51 setback at Big South Conference opponent Campbell University (14-8, 6-5) on Saturday afternoon at Gore Arena in Buies Creek, North Carolina. Freshman Daeisha Brown|Richmond led the Lancers (9-13, 6-5) with a game-high 23 points, while senior Chelsea Coward|Mechanicsville notched a team-best 10 rebounds in the outing. Longwood returns to action on Thursday, February 7 when they host High Point University at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall.

Longwood opened the game with a bucket from freshman Khalilah Ali|Suffolk, but Campbell followed with seven straight points to take an early advantage. The teams alternated baskets and the Lancers stayed within two possessions before scoring six unanswered, capped by a pull-up jumper from freshman Raven Williams|Richmond, to regain the lead at 16-15 with 7:19 remaining in the first half. The Fightin' Camels scored on their next time down the floor to go ahead once again, but Brown knocked down four consecutive free throws to give LU its largest lead of the day, up 20-17, with 5:21 left in the period. CU knotted the game at 20-20 on a three-point jumper before outscoring the visitors, 9-5, in the final minutes to take a 29-25 advantage into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Longwood put together a 7-2 run, aided by five-straight points from senior Erin Neal|Durham, N.C., to regain the lead for the final time in the outing, up 32-31, with just under 16 minutes remaining in the contest. Campbell pulled ahead for good on the next play, and although Longwood cut the margin back to one on a bucket from Brown to trail just 35-34, the Fightin' Camels put together a 16-4 run to create a 51-38 margin with 5:48 left to go. Longwood fought back, outscoring the hosts, 5-1, to make it a nine point game on a layup from Neal. The Lancers would come within nine on three more occasions in the final minutes, thanks in large part to made free throws from Brown, but Campbell would go on to take the 62-51 victory. 

Brown converted on a career-best 13 free throws en route to her 23-point performance. She added five rebounds, as well. Neal and Williams tallied nine points apiece to add to the offensive effort. As a team, the Lancers shot 30% (16-53) from the floor, including 18% (3-17) from beyond the arc, and 76% (16-21) from the line.

Kiera Gaines logged a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to pace Campbell. Tonisha Barker added 18 points of her own, as well. As a whole, the Fightin' Camels shot 39% (23-59) from the field, 17% (2-12) from three-point territory and 67% (14-21) from the foul line. Campbell will play its next contest at Radford on Feb. 7 beginning at 7 p.m.

Saturday's contest marked the 10th meeting ever between Longwood and Campbell in the sport of women's basketball. The Lady Camels hold a 6-4 advantage in the all-time series.
