Longwood Falls, 71-47, against Bucknell

Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. – Redshirt-senior Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas notched a team-high 20 points, as the Longwood University women's basketball team fell, 71-47, against Bucknell University (5-5) on Saturday afternoon in Willett Hall. Freshman Brenna Robbins/Erie, Pa. tied a season-best mark with six points to add to the Lancers' offensive effort. Sophomore Jaclyn Reagan/Crossville, Tenn. paced the team on the boards with a career-high six rebounds. Shelby Romine totaled a game-high 23 points to lead the Bison in the victory. Longwood (3-7) will host Big South Conference opponent Coastal Carolina University following the holiday break on Saturday, December 28 beginning at 2 p.m.

"When you are short on players, you need to have someone different step up and accept the challenge," said head coach Bill Reinson. "We had a couple who stepped up during the Eastern Kentucky game and we competed pretty well. Today, we didn't have the same determination."

Tobeck scored the first points of the afternoon for the Lancers and freshman Treasure Avery/Lincolnton, N.C. converted on a pair of free throws almost three minutes later, but the Bison controlled the pace of play in the early minutes, jumping out to a double-digit lead at 14-4 with 10:34 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Khalilah Ali/Suffolk drained two chances at the line and followed with a layup to make the score 19-8 before a three minute lull in scoring for both sides. Freshman Emily Nylen/Rockford, Ill. traded baskets with BU's Romine on four consecutive possessions to end the drought, but Bucknell took advantage of a missed opportunity by the Lancers to score four in a row and take its largest lead of the half at 27-12 with less than four minutes to go. Longwood closed the period on a seven-point spurt thanks to jumpers by junior Rianna Frazer/Batlimore, Md. and sophomore Deborah Headen/Herndon, and a three from Reagan to make it a 27-19 margin at the break.

Bucknell retaliated coming out of halftime, using a 20-6 run in the first eight and a half minutes to pull away, 47-25. Tobeck knocked down three straight field goals and Reagan added a jumper from beyond the arc to cut the difference to 15 at 49-34 with less than 10 minutes to remaining in the outing. The Lancers pulled within 15 on two more occasions after baskets from Tobeck later in the half, including for the last time at 57-42 with just over four minutes to go. Longwood would not come any closer, however, as the Bison outscored the Lancers, 14-5, in the waning minutes to seal the 71-47 decision.

Reagan and Ali each totaled five points in the decision for the Lancers. Ali also logged six rebounds on the day. As a team, the Lancers shot 32% (18-56) from the floor, including 21% (3-14) from beyond the arc, and 67% (8-12) from the line.

Romine went 11-17 from the floor en route to her game-high 23 points. She notched six boards, as well. As a whole, Bucknell shot 43% (27-63) from the field, 39% (7-18) from three-point territory and 59% (10-17) from the foul line.

Saturday's contest marked just the second meeting ever between Longwood and Bucknell in the sport of women's basketball. The all-time series is now knotted at 1-1.
