HANOVER, N.H. --
Alex Mitola scored a team-high 18 points, and Tyler Melville added 17 points, to lead Dartmouth College of the Ivy League to an 84-64 men's basketball victory past visiting Longwood University on Saturday evening in Hanover, New Hampshire. The Big Green (6-4) took the lead for good with a 12-0 run midway through the first half en route to a 40-30 lead at halftime against the visiting Lancers (5-8). Senior captain Tristan Carey/Colonial Beach led Longwood with a game-high 20 points, his fifth-straight 20-point game, while sophomore captain Lucas Woodhouse/Greenlawn, New York added 16 points and a game-high six assists. Longwood will be idle over the next week-plus during the upcoming Christmas holiday before playing again at Ohio University of the Mid-American Conference on Monday night, December 30 at 7 p.m. in Athens, Ohio.

"They (Dartmouth) played physical and their big guys really neutralized us," said first-year Longwood head coach Jayson Gee. "They started making three-point shots and we just didn't have any answers for that. For the first time this year, I was disappointed in our effort … I really was. The schedule certainly doesn't get any easier going to Ohio University, but this team has proven resilient and we'll come back out fighting."

Longwood fell behind Dartmouth at the start, 6-0, as Melville (19:25) and Mitola (17:59) each made three-point field goals. Carey answered with the first of his five three-pointers at 17:23, starting a 10-0 run that included a pair of free throws by Woodhouse and consecutive layups from sophomore transfer Leron Fisher/Baltimore, Maryland and Jeff Havenstein/Mt. Airy, Maryland, respectively, and capped by a Carey free throw to make it 10-6 at 13:32. A jumper from Carey made it 14-10 at 10:24, before the Big Green took advantage of their 12-0 run to lead 22-14 at 7:54, a lead they would not relinquish. Mitola made two three-pointers during the run, and Melville had two free throws, while John Golden closed the quick spurt with a slam dunk. The Lancers battled back to within 30-26 at 3:56, following another three-pointer by Carey, but the hosts outscored the visitors 10-4 over the remainder of the period to lead 40-30 at the intermission. Carey (11) and Woodhouse (9) combined for 20 first-half points, while Melville (10), Golden (9) and Mitola (9) combined for 28 points at the break.

Longwood and Dartmouth played evenly over the first seven minutes of the second half, as the Big Green maintained their 10-point advantage at 55-45 with 13:05 remaining. A 9-2 run sparked by another dunk from Golden and back-to-back layups by Gabas Maldunas put Dartmouth in front 64-47 at 9:31, and the hosts would not look back again. The Big Green took their largest lead at 82-55 with 4:06 left to play on another three-pointer from Mitola. The Lancers were able to reduce the final margin by outscoring Dartmouth 9-2 over the final 3:52.

Carey led Longwood with his game-high 20 points, including 5-7 three-pointers. He now totals 1,169 career points to rank 13th all-time, and ranks fourth with 176 career three-pointers.
