FARMVILLE, Va. -- Senior captain

  Â
"I thought our kids came out and played hard, and I was impressed with our mind-set, particularly to start the game," said first-year Longwood head coach
Jayson Gee. "We were able to extend the lead and really get into them defensively. I thought them shooting 40 percent was a big key to the game, and you are always pleased when you have 19 assists on 29 made field goals … that tells you that you have an unselfish basketball team."
  Â
Longwood scored the first eight points of the game to lead 8-0 at 17:13, as sophomore transfer
Leron Fisher/Baltimore, Maryland and Carey each made three-point field goals, along with a layup from senior
Jeff Havenstein/Mt. Airy, Maryland. Virginia Intermont, however, battled back to within 15-11 at 13:01 with a trio of three-pointers, including one by Hart. The Lancers, though, would take control of the contest with a 17-2 run to lead 32-13 with 6:59 left on the first-half clock, getting points from seven different players. Carey started the run with a three-pointer and scored five points, while Allen also added a three-pointer. The two teams played near even toward the break, as Longwood led 42-24 at halftime, led by Carey with 15 points at the break. Sophomore captain
Lucas Woodhouse/Greenlawn, New York had six points and six assists at the intermission, while Tyrone Smith had 10 points, of the bench, for the Cobras.

Longwood extended its advantage to 60-35 at 12:05 of the second half, as six players scored points, including four each by Ziegler, Allen and redshirt-junior captain
Jeylani Dublin/Brooklyn, New York. The Lancers took their largest lead of the game at 75-49 with 4:40 remaining on a jumper by Dublin, as Ziegler added six more points during the stretch. Virginia Intermont was able to reduce the final margin with a 12-5 run over the final 4:13, getting seven late points from Kris Harris.
