Longwood Rolls Past Bluefield State 99-73

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Senior captain Tristan Carey/Colonial Beach had a double-double with 22 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to lead Longwood University to a 99-73 men's basketball victory past visiting NCAA Division II member Bluefield State College on Saturday evening at Willett Hall in Farmville.  Sophomore Karl Ziegler/Annandale added 21 points for the host Lancers (4-7), redshirt-junior captain Jeylani Dublin/Brooklyn, New York had 17 points, off the bench, and sophomore captain Lucas Woodhouse/Greenlawn, New York also contributed a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 assists.  Remar Brothers scored a game-high 23 points, off the bench, to lead the Big Blues (3-10).  Longwood will remain at home to welcome NAIA member Virginia Intermont College on Tuesday, December 17 at 7 p.m. at Willett Hall in Farmville.
   
Longwood scored the first seven points of the game to lead 7-0 at 17:52, as Carey scored on a layup to start it and Woodhouse made a three-point field goal to close it.  The Lancers continued their early momentum to take their largest lead of the first half at 16-2 with 12:55 on the clock, getting four more points from Carey and four quick points from Dublin.  Longwood led 24-12 at 8:45, after a layup by Ziegler that followed a steal and slam dunk by Carey.  Bluefield State, however, scored eight unanswered points to close to within 24-20 at 7:37, but the Lancers responded with eight-straight points of their own to make it 32-20 at 4:34.  The Big Blues finished the half a little stronger, outscoring the hosts 14-7 over the final 4:08, to pull within 39-34 at halftime behind six points from both Brothers (a pair of three-point plays) and Avery Holliday (two three-pointers).  Brothers had 16 points at the intermission, while Carey had 12 points and Dublin eight points for Longwood.
   
Longwood still led by five points early in the second half at 47-42 with 16:52 remaining, before a 10-2 run made it 57-44 at 15:17, as Carey started the quick run with a three-pointer and Ziegler closed it with a three-pointer, the first of his career.  It was still a 13-point advantage at 62-49 with 12:42 left following another three-pointer by Carey, but five-straight points had Bluefield State within 62-54 at 11:31.  The Lancers, though, took control with a 16-5 run to lead more comfortably at 78-59 with 5:43 on the clock, getting five points from Dublin and four points from freshman Damarion Geter/Dayton, Ohio, off the bench.  The Lancers would go on to outscore the Big Blues 21-14 over the final 5:32 for the final margin and a season-high in points (99).
   
Carey led Longwood with his team-high 22 points (9-18 FGs, 2-3 3FGs, 2-2 FTs), adding the game-high 14 rebounds for his seventh career double-double, along with a game-high three steals.  Carey now totals 1,129 career points to rank 15th all-time, and ranks fourth with 168 career three-pointers.  Ziegler had 21 points (8-8 FGs, 1-1 3FGs, 4-6 FTs), seven rebounds and matched his career high with five assists for the Lancers.  Dublin added 17 points (7-9 FGs, 3-5 FTs) and Woodhouse finished with his fifth career double-double, contributing the 13 points and game-high 11 assists.  Geter posted career-highs of six points and three assists in 17 minutes.  Longwood shot a season-high 61% (35-57) from the field, including 55% (6-11) on three-pointers and 74% (23-31) at the free throw line.  The Lancers outscored Bluefield State 52-18 in the paint, and 20-0 points off turnovers.
   
Brothers led Bluefield State with his game-high 23 points in 23 minutes.  Treon Claiborne had 17 points for the Big Blues, while Holliday finished with 15 points.  BSC shot 40% (23-57) from the field, including 35% (12-34) on three-pointers and 71% (15-21) at the line.
   
Longwood and Bluefield State were meeting for the first time in the sport, and the Lancers now lead the series, 1-0.
