Longwood Takes on Presbyterian for First Place

CLINTON, S.C. – The Longwood University women's basketball team will square off against Big South Conference opponent Presbyterian College on Thursday, January 10 in a battle for first place in the league standings. The game, between the only two teams still undefeated in conference play, is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Blue Hose's Templeton Arena.

The Blue Hose, who are 9-6 overall and a league-best 4-0 in Big South games, are riding a four-game win streak, including a 68-62 overtime victory against Campbell University on Jan. 5 in their most recent outing. PC, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Ronny Fisher, is paced by senior Dria David and junior Karlee Taylor with an average of 10.7 and 10.0 points, respectively. Senior Mariah Pietrowski has added to the offensive effort with 9.6 points and a team-best 5.1 rebounds. Senior Shonda Burnside is tied for first on the team with 5.1 boards, as well. As a squad, the Blue Hose are shooting 41% (297-720) from the floor, 33% (60-183) from beyond the arc and 64% (117-184) from the line.

Looking at Longwood
Longwood University went undefeated at home last week, picking up two Big South Conference wins to improve to 6-8 overall and 3-0 in league play. The team defeated Gardner-Webb, 87-75, for the second time this season on Jan. 3 in its first home contest since Nov. 17. The Lancers then earned a 79-74 decision against Winthrop on Jan. 5. Through 14 games, senior Crystal Smith|Richmond leads the team with 15.8 points per game. Classmate Chelsea Coward|Mechanicsville is second with 15.6 points, and paces LU with 8.9 rebounds per game. Freshman Daeisha Brown|Richmond rounds out the double-digit scorers for the Lancers with 11.9 points per game. As a team, Longwood is shooting 36% (311-870) from the field, including 29% (99-342) from three-point territory, and 69% (181-262) from the free throw line.

Series History
Thursday's contest will mark the fifth meeting ever between Longwood and Presbyterian in the sport of women's basketball, and the first as conference opponents. Longwood has an undefeated, 4-0 advantage in the all-time series. The squads first met on November 19, 1994 when Longwood held on to take a 70-67 decision. In their most recent meeting on February 17, 2009, the Lancers put together a 13-0, first half run and never looked back, earning a 50-35 victory.
