HIGH POINT, N.C. – John Brown scored 17 points to lead High Point University to an 88-60 Big South Conference men's basketball victory against Longwood University on Wednesday night in High Point, North Carolina. Freshman
Michael Kessens|Nyon, Switzerland led the Lancers (3-19, 0-8 Big South) with a career-high and game-high 22 points in the North Division contest. The Panthers (10-10, 5-3 Big South) outscored their visitors 53-30 in the second half, and had four players in double figures, including Allan Chaney with 16 points. Longwood will play again on the road at South Division opponent Gardner-Webb University on Saturday night, February 2 in Boiling Springs, North Carolina at 7 p.m.
Longwood never led at High Point, though was within 12-10 at 12:10 following a basket from freshman
Karl Ziegler|Annandale. The Lancers were still within 20-14 at 8:23 after a jumper by Kessens who had 13 first-half points. The Panthers extended their advantage to 26-14 at 7:09 on a three-point field goal from Dejuan McGaughy, and the HPU lead was 33-24 with 3:15 left until halftime after an old-fashioned three-point play by Brown. Longwood, however, battled back and was within 33-30 at 1:06 following a pair of free throws from junior captain
Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach. Brown, though, scored the last basket of the half to make it 35-30 at the intermission, giving him 11 first-half points.
High Point took control at the start of the second half, outscoring Longwood 17-6, to lead 52-36 at 14:55 behind six quick points from Brown. A three-pointer by junior captain
David Robinson|Chesterfield made it 54-41 with 14:01 remaining, but that would be as close as the Lancers would get. The Panthers used a 22-8 run to lead 76-49 at 7:22 with points from six different players, including a trio of three-pointers. High Point had its largest lead of the night with the final margin, as 12 of the 15 players who played, scored for the hosts.
Kessens led Longwood with his career-high and game-high 22 points (10-12 FGs, 1-2 3FGs, 1-4 FTs), adding five rebounds. Carey added 15 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Lancers. Robinson finished with 10 points and three assists, while freshman
Lucas Woodhouse|Greenlawn, New York had a game-high nine assists. LU shot 50% (24-48) from the field, including 36% (5-14) on three-pointers, and 58% (7-12) at the free throw line.
Brown led High Point with his 17 points, adding three assists and three steals. Chaney had 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Panthers. McGaughy finished with 14 points and five assists, and Adam Weary contributed 10 points. HPU shot 50% (37-74) from the field, including 56% (9-16) on three-pointers, and 63% (5-8) at the line.
Longwood and High Point were meeting for the 20th time in the sport, and the Panthers lead the series, 14-6.
High Point will remain at home to host Presbyterian College on Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
