“I'm happy with how we played and fought in our first tournament of the year, said second year head coach
Jakob Gustafsson. “There are always kinks to be worked out going into your first few matches of the year. Everyone responded really well to tough early losses and bounced back with better tennis for the next round. The big surprise of the tournament was our brand new doubles team of Malin and Sarah. For being their first few matches playing together, they really played well above expectations. If we can build on this for our future tournaments, we have a successful fall ahead of us.”
Pinyol won her first round match over Laura Gutierrez of Norfolk State University (6-0, 5-7, 10-7), lost in the semifinal to Gemma Valls of Radford University (1-6, 2-6) and won her third-place match against Cameron Richard of Liberty (6-4, 5-7, 10-8). Moomau won her first round match over Allison Michael of RU (6-0, 6-1) and her semifinal against Gabby Gabriel of Appalachian State University (7-6 [5], 6-4), before falling in the final to Rebecca Jenkins of Liberty (4-6, 3-6). Allgurin enjoyed a first round bye, lost in the semifinal to Jacqueline Palmucci of James Madison University (0-6, 2-6) and won her third-place match against Tea Ivanovic of Virginia Tech (6-0, 6-4). Moomau and Allgurin won their first round match over NSU (8-1) and their second round match against Liberty (8-6), before falling in the final to JMU (5-8).
