FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University defeated visiting Marshall University of Conference USA 2-1 Saturday night in a preseason exhibition match at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  Freshman Bridget Bergquist|Bristow (Brentsville) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Lancers in the 71st minute, assisted by sophomore Kelsey Lucas|Fredericksburg (Fredericksburg Christian).  Longwood received a first-half goal from sophomore Samantha Phillips|Chesapeake (Grassfield) in the 23rd minute, assisted by junior Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage), while Chelsey Maiden scored for the Thundering Herd in the 31st minute as the contest was tied at 1-1 at the intermission.  Senior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the duration for the Lancers with one save.  Longwood will host Drexel University of the Colonial Athletic Association in its regular season opener on Friday night, August 17, at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m.
