NEWARK, N.J. -- Longwood University dropped a 94-51 men's basketball decision on the road at the New Jersey Institute of Technology from the Great West Conference Saturday afternoon in Newark, New Jersey. The Lancers (10-19) fell behind 11-0 to start the contest and trailed 55-28 at halftime as the Highlanders (12-16) made a record 18 three-point field goals en route to their home victory. Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach (La Salle) added 16 points for the visitors. NJIT was led by Isaiah Wilkerson with 17 points, and Ryan Woods with 16 points. Longwood will play again on Monday night, February 27, remaining on the road at nationally prominent Gonzaga University of the West Coast Conference in Spokane, Washington at 9 p.m. ET. Anthony Taylor|Egg Harbor Township, N.J. (Egg Harbor Township) made a three-pointer and Carter converted two free throws at 15:24. A layup from Carey made it 15-9 at 13:35, but that was as close as it would be the remainder of the contest. A 16-2 run had the Highlanders in front 31-11 at 10:05 as the hosts made four-straight triples, including two by Arjun Ohri off the bench. Carey responded with back-to-back three-pointers of his own for the Lancers to make it 31-17 at 9:11, before NJIT outscored the visitors 24-11 over the final 8:33 to lead 55-28 at the intermission. The second half was no better as only the final margin was left to determine. The Highlanders took their largest lead at 87-39 with 7:41 left to play on their record 18th three-pointer. Longwood was able to reduce the final margin down the stretch, outscoring NJIT 12-7 over the final 7:25.
Carter led Longwood with 18 points, adding six rebounds. Carey finished with 16 points, and Taylor had nine points and four assists for the Lancers. Senior
Jan van der Kooij|Tiendeveen, The Netherlands (Roelof van Echten) added a game-high 13 rebounds. LU shot 29% (18-62) from the field, including 30% (6-20) on three-pointers, and 69% (9-13) at the free throw line.
Wilkerson led NJIT with 17 points, adding seven rebounds and three steals. Woods finished with 16 points, while Chris Flores had 15 points and seven assists for the Highlanders. NJIT shot 52% (33-64) from the field, including 50% (18-36) on three-pointers, and 77% (10-13) at the line.
It was the 11th meeting between the two schools in the sport, and Longwood continues to lead NJIT in the all-time series at 7-4, including an 85-70 home win earlier this season (1.7) with a full and healthy roster.
