Longwood Defeats Visiting Virginia-Wise 85-74

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an 85-74 men's basketball victory past the University of Virginia at Wise Wednesday night at Willett Hall in Farmville.  The Lancers (10-16) led for the final 32-plus minutes, including 41-33 at halftime, and by as many as 16 points in the second half against the visiting Highland Cavaliers (9-15).  Sophomore Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach (La Salle) led Longwood with a near triple-double of 24 points along with career-highs of 11 rebounds and nine assists.  Senior Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch) added 17 points, including five three-point field goals, while classmate Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg) was limited to 13 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes before being fouled out with 11:24 left in the game on Senior NIght.  Darius Smith led NAIA UVA-Wise with a game-high 30 points.  Longwood will play again this Saturday, February 25, on the road at the New Jersey Institute of Technology from the Great West Conference in Newark, New Jersey at 2 p.m.
   
Longwood and UVA-Wise played close early as the hosts led 8-5 at 15:12 following a layup by Carey.  The Highland Cavaliers took their only lead of the game at 10-8 after a three-pointer from Travis Berry at 14:29.  The Lancers used an 18-5 run to lead 26-15 at 10:24 on another driving layup by Carey who scored five points during the run that included a rare four-point play when Washington made a three-pointer while fouled and converted the free throw.  LU extended its advantage to as many as 15 points at 37-22 with 4:21 left until halftime, though allowed the visitors to close to 41-33 at the intermission as Smith scored five late points.
   
Longwood led 47-37 at 15:28 after Carter went left baseline and dunked to cap six-straight points for the school's all-time leading scorer (1,821 career points).  Carey added his own dunk at 12:45 with a monster two-handed slow down on a fastbreak to make it 54-43, and the Lancers took their largest lead at 62-46 with 8:17 on the clock after another three-pointer by Washington.  LU still led 69-58 at 4:53 following an old-fashioned three-point play from senior Jan van der Kooij|Tiendeveen, The Netherlands (Roelof van Echten).  UVA-Wise managed to close to 78-74 at 1:07, aided by four late three-pointers, including two each by Smith and Berry.  Longwood, however, secured its victory in the final home game of the season with 7-10 free throws over the final 1:03, including six-straight made during the last 44-seconds.
   
Carey finished with the near triple-double of 24 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists for Longwood while playing all 40 minutes as the Lancers continue to play with just seven healthy players in uniform.  Washington added 17 points, including 5-9 three-pointers, while also playing all 40 minutes.  Carter had 13 points and six rebounds while limited to 19 minutes due to the foul difficulty, unfortunately, in his last appearance at Willett Hall.  van der Kooij finished with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  LU shot 53% (29-55) from the field, including 47% (9-19) on three-pointers, and 67% (18-27) at the free throw line.
   
Smith led Virginia-Wise with a game-high 30 points, including 5-11 three-pointers, adding nine assists.  Berry finished with 15 points for the Highland Cavaliers, while Josh Jordan added 11 points.  UVA-Wise shot 38% (28-73) from the field, including 33% (10-30) on three-pointers, and 67% (8-12) at the line.
   
It was the 12th meeting between the two schools in the sport, and Longwood now leads the all-time series at 11-1 with 11-straight wins past Virginia-Wise.

Prior to the game, Antwan Carter was presented a commemorative ball in recognition of becoming the all-time scoring leader at Longwood.  Kevin Jefferson '90, who scored 1,806 career points for the Lancers, attended to make the presentation to Carter who still has three games remaining in his outstanding career.  In addition, Martiz Washington was also given a commemorative ball in recognition of recently surpassing 1,000 career points.  He enters his final three games with 1,057 career points that currently ranks 17th all-time.
