BOX SCORE

NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 66-52 men's basketball decision on the road at Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Monday night in Norfolk.  The Lancers (9-18) led 29-26 at halftime before the Spartans (19-9) scored the first 18 points of the second half to lead 44-29 with 14:41 remaining en route to their home victory.  Despite the outcome, Longwood senior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) became the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,808 career points after posting 19 points and 11 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season and 38th of his career.  Carter surpassed Kevin Jefferson '90 who scored 1,806 career points.  Sophomore Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach (La Salle) added 13 points and nine rebounds for the visitors.  Norfolk State was led by Chris McEachin with a game-high 21 points, and Marcos Tamares with 20 points.  Longwood will play again on Wednesday night, February 22, hosting the University of Virginia at Wise for Senior Night at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m.

Longwood led early at 5-2 after a three-point field goal by Carter at 18:06.  Norfolk State answered with a 17-7 run to lead 19-12 at 11:55 as Tamares (4) and McEachin (3) combined for seven of the points.  The Lancers, however, took advantage of their own 17-7 run to lead 29-26 at halftime as Carter and Carey each scored 11 first-half points.  It helped that NSU shot just 27% (8-30) from the field in the opening period, including 1-14 on three-point attempts.

Norfolk State took control with its 18 unanswered points to begin the second half as McEachin (10) and Tamares (6) scored all of the points, including three three-pointers by McEachin to lead 44-29 at 14:41.  Longwood finally scored at 14:25 on a layup from senior Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch) that started an 8-2 run to close to within 46-37 at 10:17 after a jumper by Carter.  The Spartans, though, got nine quick points from Tamares while taking a 60-45 advantage with 6:11 on the clock and only the final margin was left to determine.  Carter tied the scoring record with a tip-in basket at 4:49 (60-49), and set the new scoring record with a jumper from just inside the three-point line and left of the circle with 1:04 on the clock (66-52).

Carter led Longwood with 19 points and 11 rebounds, making 9-18 from the field, including 1-2 on three-pointers, while 0-3 at the free throw line -- adding two steals in 35 minutes.  Carey finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, and three assists while playing all 40 minutes for the Lancers.  LU shot 36% (22-61) from the field, including 19% (5-26) on three-pointers, and 33% (3-9) at the line.  Longwood continues to play with just seven healthy players in uniform as four of the five starters played at least 35 minutes.

McEachin led Norfolk State with 21 points, including five three-pointers.  Tamares finished with 20 points, while Kyle O'Quinn had a game-high 16 rebounds, adding six points for the Spartans.  NSU shot 40% (24-60) from the field, including 53% (16-30) in the second half, 28% (7-25) on three-pointers, and 52% (11-21) at the line.

It was the sixth meeting between the two schools in the sport, and Norfolk State now leads the series at 4-2.
