FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a hard-fought 67-59 men's basketball decision to the University of North Dakota from the Great West Conference Saturday afternoon at Willett Hall in Farmville. The Lancers (9-17) led the entire first half before the Fighting Sioux (12-14) tied it at 28-28 at halftime, and UND took a 49-36 lead with 13:43 remaining before holding on at the end after LU was within 59-56 with 3:56 left. Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach (La Salle) had 13 points as LU played with just seven healthy players in uniform. Aaron Anderson led North Dakota with 19 points, and Patrick Mitchell had 18 points. Longwood will play again on Monday night, February 20, on the road at Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in Norfolk at 7 p.m.
Longwood scored the first seven points of the game as Carey was good on a jumper and three-point field goal that was followed by a layup from Carter at 17:39. After a timeout, North Dakota scored eight unanswered points, including a pair of three-pointers to lead 8-7 at 15:04. The Lancers, however, used a 15-7 run to lead 22-15 at 7:21 as Carter capped the run with seven-straight points, including a three-pointer. It was 28-22 at 4:18 after a jumper by Carey, but the Fighting Sioux scored the last six points of the half to tie it at 28-28 at the intermission.
North Dakota began the second half on a 12-2 run to lead 40-30 at 15:51 behind six quick points from Mitchell on a pair of three-pointers. Longwood closed to within 42-36 at 15:04 with two free throws by Washington, but the Fighting Sioux took advantage of seven-straight points for their largest lead at 49-36 with 13:43 remaining with Anderson good on a three-pointer and layup to close the spurt. The Lancers battled back with a 12-1 run and closed to within 50-48 at 8:50 behind eight-straight points from Washington, including two three-pointers. UND, though, scored nine-straight points to lead 59-48 at 6:09 after another three-pointer by Mitchell. LU again rallied to within 59-56 at 3:56 after an old-fashioned three-point play from Carey, but the visitors managed to keep the lead behind six of their final eight points by Anderson, including a key jumper at the end of the shot-clock (1:32), and 4-4 free throws over the final 40-seconds.
Carter finished with 21 points and eight rebounds for Longwood, adding three assists while playing all 40 minutes. He now totals 1,789 career points and 970 career rebounds to rank second all-time in each category, trailing only Kevin Jefferson '90 (1,806) in scoring and Jerome Kersey '84 (1,162) in rebounding. Washington added 16 points, five assists, and three steals while playing all 40 minutes as well for the Lancers, and now totals 1,033 career points to rank 19th all-time. Carey had 13 points and six assists while also playing all 40 minutes. LU shot 46% (24-52) from the field, including 35% (8-23) on three-pointers, and 100% (3-3) at the free throw line.
Anderson led North Dakota with 19 points. Mitchell finished with 18 points for Fighting Sioux. UND shot 49% (24-49) from the field, including 30% (8-27) on three-pointers, and 79% (11-14) at the line.
It was the second meeting between the two schools in the sport of men's basketball, and North Dakota has won both contests, including a 90-74 decision last season (1.9.11) in Grand Forks.
