Longwood opened with a three-pointer by Washington just 30-seconds into the game, and led 16-14 at 12:18 after a jumper from Carey that followed eight quick points by Washington.  WAU battled back and led 27-25 at 7:42 on a Newton three-pointer, but the Lancers responded with a 17-11 run to close the period with a 42-38 halftime advantage.  Washington (14) and Carter (13) combined for 27 first-half points, while Newton had 19 points at the break.

Longwood extended its lead to 51-40 at 17:00 as Carter scored six quick points inside ahead of a three-point play from senior Jan van der Kooij|Tiendeveen, The Netherlands (Roelof van Echten).  WAU again fought back with a 12-4 run to within 55-52 with 13:19 left behind six quick points by Newton.  The Lancers, however, again answered and built their advantage to 79-63 at 7:01 on a jumper by redshirt-freshman Anthony Taylor|Egg Harbor Township, N.J. “We have faced an incredible amount of adversity lately, and collectively have managed to stay the course and be able to do enough to keep putting ourselves in position to be successful,” said ninth-year head coach Mike Gillian.  “One of the things I told the team after tonight's game was that we have to be doing an awful lot correct to be in the position to be protecting a double-digit lead in the waning stages of the game.  It's certainly better than having to try and come back from a deficit like that.  Tonight, we were able to survive some late-game errors and come out with a win; we have got to keep working and learning so our performance in those late-game situations is better.

“The crowd was awesome tonight; it is awesome when we have Greek Night and you see all the fraternities and sororities so colorfully represented in the gym.  Here at Longwood, we are all in this competitive arena together and what the students bring to the gym on a night like tonight makes a huge difference.”

Carter finished with 28 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Longwood while moving into second place on the all-time scoring list with 1,768 career points, surpassing Jerome Kersey '84 (1,756).  Washington added 23 points to become only the 19th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points (1,017), tying his career high with seven three-pointers (7-8) for the Lancers.  Carey had 17 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high eight assists.  van der Kooij finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Taylor contributed career-highs of 10 points, seven assists, and five rebounds.  LU shot 60% (36-60 from the field, including 50% (9-18) on three-pointers, and 60% (9-15) at the line.

Newton led Washington Adventist with a game-high 39 points, including 8-18 three-pointers, adding nine rebounds.  Coleman finished with 23 points for the Shock, while Anthony Berry added 11 points off the bench.  WAU shot 42% (34-82) from the field, including 31% (10-32) on three-pointers, and 71% (10-14) at the line.

It was the fourth meeting between the two schools in the sport of men's basketball, and Longwood leads the all-time series at 4-0.
