Longwood Falls At Canisius 82-54

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Isaac Sosa scored a game-high 24 points, making 8-12 three-point field goals, to lead Canisius College to an 82-54 non-conference men's basketball decision past Longwood University on Monday night in Buffalo, New York.  Redshirt-sophomore Jeylani Dublin|Brooklyn, New York led the Lancers (3-8) with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for his second double-double this season.  The Golden Griffins (7-2) made 13 three-pointers in the contest and also got 18 points off the bench from Alshwan Hymes.  Longwood will play again on Wednesday night, December 19, at Seton Hall University of the BIG EAST Conference in Newark, New Jersey at 7 p.m.

Longwood scored the first basket of the game as Dublin made a jumper at 19:43, but Sosa connected on four of five three-point field goal attempts to lead Canisius on a 16-4 run to go in front 16-6 at 15:54.  A dunk by Chris Manhertz made it 18-9 at 14:35 before the Lancers battled back with a 9-2 run of their own, closing to within 20-18 at 9:25 after a pair of free throws from freshman Michael Kessens|Nyon, Switzerland.  The Golden Griffins, however, scored 10 unanswered points to take their largest lead of the first half at 30-18 with 6:34 left until halftime.  The visitors outscored the hosts 10-9 over the final 5:40 of the period and trailed 39-28 at the intermission.  Sosa had 12 first-half points, and Manhertz had 10 points, while freshman Nik Brown|Ashburn had nine first-half points, and Dublin had seven at the break.

Longwood scored the first six points of the second half, making it 39-34 with 17:45 remaining, but that would be as close as it would get.  Canisius used a quick 11-4 run to lead 50-38 at 14:22 after two more three-pointers by Sosa, and after the Lancers cut it to 50-42 with 12:43 remaining, the Golden Griffins outscored the visitors 10-2 to lead 60-44 at 9:28 with four quick points from Hymes.  It was 63-50 at 7:52 following a jumper from Kessens, but the hosts finished it off with a 19-4 run en route to the final margin of victory.

Dublin led Longwood with his 12 points and game-high 10 rebounds for his second double-double this year.  Brown had 11 points and four assists for the Lancers.  Kessens, along with junior captains Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach and David Robinson|Chesterfield, each contributed nine points.  LU shot 34.9% (22-63) from the field, including 18.8% (3-16) on three-pointers, and 58.3% (7-12) at the free throw line.

Sosa led Canisius with his game-high 24 points, making 8-12 three-pointers.  Hymes had 18 points off the bench for the Golden Griffins.  Manhertz finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.  CC shot 50.0% (30-60) from the field, including 46.4% (13-28) on three-pointers, and 60.0% (9-15) at the line.  The hosts took advantage of a 35-4 difference in bench scoring.

Longwood and Canisius were meeting for the second time in the sport, and the Golden Griffins lead the series, 2-0.
