Longwood Defeats Visiting Southern Virginia 86-74

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Junior Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach scored a game-high 25 points and Longwood University withstood a late rally in defeating Division III Southern Virginia University 86-74 on Thursday night at Willett Hall in Farmville.  Freshman Michael Kessens|Nyon, Switzerland added 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, freshman Nik Brown|Ashburn had 12 points, and freshman Karl Ziegler|Annandale contributed 10 points for the Lancers (3-7), who improved to 25-0 in non-Division I home games since 2004-05, the first year of playing a Division I schedule.  Anders Jacobson led the visiting Knights (6-3), who rallied from a 21-point deficit to within 76-72 with 3:13 remaining, with 14 points.  Longwood will play again on Monday, December 17, on the road at Canisius College of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in Buffalo, New York at 7 p.m.
   
Longwood never trailed against SVU, though it was tied early at 4-4, before the Lancers used an 18-6 run to lead 22-10 at 12:18 after a three-point field goal by Carey, who scored nine early points.  A layup from Ziegler made it 35-17 at 6:12, and LU took its largest lead of the first half at 43-23 with 1:32 left until the break after a layup by Kessens.  The Knights scored five of the final six points in the period, as the hosts led 44-28 at halftime behind 17 first-half points from Carey.
   
Longwood maintained its double-digit advantage to start the second half and took its largest lead at 58-37 with 14:54 left after another layup by Kessens.  A jumper from Carey made it 62-46 at 11:24, and it was 72-58 with 5:52 left after a free throw by Kessens.  Southern Virginia, however, battled back with a quick 14-4 run to pull within 76-72 at 3:13 after making three three-pointers -- two from Isaac Jacobson who added a layup for eight of the points -- along with an old-fashioned three-point play.  The Lancers, though, secured the outcome by outscoring SVU 10-2 over the final 3:03 as Brown scored five late points and Kessens finished it with a dunk inside with 11-seconds on the clock.
   
Carey led Longwood with his game-high 25 points, adding nine rebounds and four assists.  Kessens had 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double this season, adding four assists and three blocks for the Lancers.  Brown contributed 12 points and four six assists.  Ziegler finished with 10 points off the bench, and redshirt-sophomore Jeylani Dublin|Brooklyn, New York had eight points and nine rebounds, as the hosts enjoyed a 43-28 advantage on the boards.  LU shot a season-best 55.7% (34-61) from the field, though just 1-8 on three-pointers, and 65.4 (17-26) at the line.
   
Anders Jacobson led Southern Virginia with his 14 points, adding four assists.  Jonathan Jacobson and Casey Nye each had 13 points for the Knights.  Isaac Jacobson finished with nine points and eight rebounds.  SVU shot 42.2% (27-64) from the field, including 36.4% (8-22) on three-pointers, and 80.0% (12-15) at the line.
   
Longwood and Southern Virginia were playing for the eighth time in the sport.  The Lancers now lead the series, 7-1, including seven-straight wins.
