Michael Kessens|Nyon, Switzerland with his second consecutive double-double of 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The Razorbacks (2-0), who led 55-34 at halftime and opened the second half on a 21-4 run, had six players score in double figures while led by BJ Young with a game-high 23 points. It was the first of four games in the 2012 Continental Tire/Las Vegas Invitational, as Longwood will play at nationally-ranked #13 Creighton University on Tuesday night, November 20, in Omaha, Nebraska at 8:05 p.m. ET. “You don't face that type of pressure, and with that relentlessness every day,” said 10th-year head coach Mike Gillian. “Arkansas forced us into some turnovers, we had some unforced turnovers … the cumulative effect was us giving them a lot of free points early in the game. Those things are very difficult to overcome.”
Longwood was within 14-10 at 12:49 of the first half after a layup from junior captain
David Robinson|Chesterfield, who scored five early points. Arkansas scored 12 unanswered points, including two three-point field goals by Anthlon Bell to lead 26-10 at 9:50. The Lancers were still within 42-27 at 4:59 following a jumper from freshman
Karl Ziegler|Annandale, but the Razorbacks closed the half with a 13-7 run to lead 55-34 at the intermission. Young had 16 points at halftime, and Bell had 10 points at the break, as did Kessens for the visitors.
Arkansas increased its advantage to 71-38 with its big run over the first 4:10 of the second half behind six points from Marshawn Powell and five points by Young. Longwood managed to pull within 79-52 at 10:54 on a pair of free throws from Kessens that closed a 14-8 run. The Razorbacks responded with 12-straight points, including six points by Bell on a three-pointer and a three-point play, to lead 91-52 at 8:32. The hosts continued to add to their advantage down the stretch, taking their largest lead with 1:25 on the clock (112-61).
Kessens led Longwood with his double-double of 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, adding three steals and two blocks. Junior captain
Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach had 12 points, Robinson finished with 11 points and Ziegler added eight points off the bench for the Lancers. LU shot 39.6% (21-53) from the field, including 23.5% (4-17) on three-pointers, and 70.8% (17-24) at the free throw line. Longwood had 28 turnovers that were converted into 47 opponent points.
Young led Arkansas with his game-high 23 points, added five assists in 20 minutes. Bell and Powell each had 16 points for the Razorbacks. Rickey Scott contributed 12 points and a game-high six assists off the bench, Jacorey Williams had 11 points off the bench, and Michael Qualls added 10 points. UA shot 52.4% (43-82) from the field, including 23.8% (5-21) on three-pointers, and 65.6% (21-32) at the line. The hosts out-rebounded the visitors 48-32, including 23 offensive rebounds turned into 17 second-chance points.
Longwood and Arkansas were meeting for the first time in the sport.
