Longwood Battles NJIT Saturday At Willett Hall - Only Home Game Of This Month

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University returns to campus for its only home game this month on Saturday, January 7, hosting the New Jersey Institute of Technology from the Great West Conference at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m.  The Lancers of ninth-year head coach Mike Gillian are 4-11 overall, including 3-3 at home where the program is 35-12 (.745) during the past three-plus years.  Senior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) (17.2 points, 8.6 rebounds), along with classmate Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) (13.1 points, 5.7 assists), continue to lead the team this season.  NJIT is coached by Jim Engles and is 6-7 while led by senior Isaiah Wilkerson (15.5 points) and junior Chris Flores (11.7 points).

Looking At The Last Game
Longwood dropped a 96-77 road decision at Army from the Patriot League Jan. 3 in West Point, New York.  The Lancers trailed 51-30 at halftime and never recovered during the road setback.  Jeremiah Bowman led LU with 17 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Antwan Carter with 15 points and nine rebounds, David Robinson with a career-high 14 points off the bench, Tristan Carey with 13 points, and Martiz Washington with 11 points.  Longwood shot 38% (24-64) from the field, including 22% (5-23) on three-pointers, and 80% (24-30) at the free throw line.  Army shot 56% (34-61) from the field, including 54% (13-24) on three-pointers, and 60% (15-25) at the line.

Longwood is 4-11 overall, including 3-3 at home where the program is 35-12 (.745) during the past three-plus years.  Antwan Carter (17.2 points, 8.6 rebounds), along with Jeremiah Bowman (13.1 points, 5.7 assists), continue to lead the Lancers this season.  They've been joined in the lineup by Tristan Carey (11.5 points, 4.5 rebounds), Martiz Washington (9.1 points, 31 3FGs), and Jan van der Kooij (6.9 points, 5.1 rebounds).  LU averages 73.2 points while shooting 43% from the field, including 34% on three-point field goals, and 65% at the line -- allowing opponents 85.0 points.

Head Coach Mike Gillian
Mike Gillian (North Adams State '86) was named the seventh head coach for men's basketball at Longwood on May 2, 2003.  The Ayer, Massachusetts native is 79-179 overall with the Lancers, including 4-11 this season, along with a career-best record of 17-14 during 2008-09 when Gillian earned 2009 Independent Coach of the Year honors from CollegeInsider.com.  He previously had been an assistant coach for current Miami (Fla.) head coach Jim Larranaga while at George Mason for six years (1997-2003) following a year with Coach Larranaga at Bowling Green State (1996-97).

Series History
Longwood is 6-3 all-time against NJIT, including a split of two games last season, winning 88-81 in Farmville (1.18.11) before a 65-64 road loss in Newark, New Jersey (2.5.11).  Martiz Washington led the Lancers with 22 points off the bench during the home victory, while Chris Flores had 22 points for the Highlanders in Farmville.  Isaiah Wilkerson made a game-winning layup with just 1.2-seconds on the clock and finished with 14 points for NJIT during its home win, and Flores scored 19 points, while Antwan Carter posted 29 points and 11 rebounds for Longwood in New Jersey.

NJIT of the Great West Conference is coached by Jim Engles who is in his fourth year with the program, compiling a record of 32-73, including 6-7 this season after a 78-58 home win past Lafayette College (1.2).  Isaiah Wilkerson (15.5 points) and Chris Flore (11.7 points) have led the Highlanders, joined in the lineup by Ryan Woods (7.5 points), Arjun Ohri (7.3 points), and PJ Miller (6.5 points).  NJIT is averaging 65.5 points while shooting 41% from the field, including 32% on three-point field goals, and 67% at the line -- allowing opponents 65.1 points.
