BOX SCORE

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Longwood University dropped a 2-1 double-overtime women's soccer decision on the road at East Tennessee State University of the Atlantic Sun Conference Friday afternoon in Johnson City, Tennessee. Jessica Hiltenbrand scored the game-winning goal late in the second 10-minute overtime period for the Bucs at 108:40. Junior Nikki Glisson|Mechanicsville (Hanover) scored the only goal for the Lancers (1-2-2) in the 18th minute. Longwood will play again on Sunday afternoon, September 4, hosting Appalachian State University of the Southern Conference at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m. The home match against the Mountaineers has been designated Joshua Bolt Day with special recognition of Joshua and the Bolt family scheduled during a special pre-game ceremony. Admission is free.

ETSU took the very early 1-0 advantage at 2:14 when Jenna Caudle scored unassisted from the left side of the box. Longwood did not take too much time to tally the equalizer as Glisson scored her second goal of the season at 17:43, assisted by junior captain Lindsey Ottavio|Fairfax (W.T. Woodson). It was Ottavio's second assist this fall, and the score remained tied through regulation, the first 10-minute extra period, and nearly another OT before Hiltenbrand scored on a free kick with just 1:20 left on the clock.

“Going into the match, we knew we had to stop number 22 (Caudle) and not give up set pieces,” said head coach Todd Dyer '93. “Well, she scored early and they scored again on a direct kick that we conceded with under 90-seconds left. It hurts, as it should, but we have a chance to respond on Sunday.”

ETSU took a 15-13 edge in shots, including 7-6 in attempts on-goal, though Longwood had a 9-5 advantage on corner kicks. Glisson (two shots on-goal) and senior captain Kacie Oliver|Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) each took three shots, while junior keeper Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with five saves. Caitlin Gaughan played the duration for the Bucs with four saves, while ETSU had one team stop, and Caudle, Ramey Kerns, and Lucy Goffe each took two shots for ETSU.

Lancers Dedicating ASU Match to Joshua Bolt
Joshua, the son of Kyle and Jennifer Bolt, is a local boy who celebrated his 10th birthday on August 31. He successfully battles a condition that affects the brain known as cerebral palsy. The women's soccer team first met Joshua during the spring of 2008 through an opportunity to help volunteer with him. He is unable to walk, talk, or use his hands as well as others, but he works hard and has fun learning. Joshua enjoys reading, drawing, writing, and learning high school and college level math. He loves dogs, meeting new people, horseback riding, traveling, swimming, playing outdoors, gardening, watching DVDs and playing with toy soldiers. An essential component of Joshua's program is community involvement. Longwood and his Lancers know this first hand as the Lancers started working with Joshua on a weekly basis nearly three years ago, though many wonderful volunteers have helped since 2005 when Joshua started this program. His many, many successes since then have been tremendous. Anyone interested in volunteering may contact associate head coach Steve Brdarski at 395.2354.
