Longwood Falls On The Road At Maryland 106-52

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Longwood University dropped a 106-52 men's basketball road decision at the University of Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference Wednesday night at the Comcast Center in College Park, Maryland. Senior captain Aaron Mitchell|Matoaca (Manatee CC) led the visiting Lancers (8-19) with 15 points. Sean Mosley led six players in double-figure scoring for the host Terrapins (16-8) with a game-high 20 points. Longwood will play again on Saturday afternoon, February 12, with another game on the road at fellow Independent Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia at 2 p.m.

Maryland scored the first 11 points of the game during the first 2:20 as Dino Gregory scored six quick points. Longwood was within 12-5 at 15:57 after a three-point field goal by junior Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch). The Lancers trailed 21-9 at 13:03 following two free throws from junior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg). The Terrapins, however, extended their advantage to 33-12 at 7:33 with a 12-3 run as Haukur Palsson came off the bench to score five quick points. UM continued its momentum for the remainder of the period, outscoring LU 17-10 while building a 50-22 lead at the intermission.

Longwood scored the first basket of the second half on a layup by Mitchell to make it 50-24 at 19:32 but that was as close as it would get. Maryland steadily increased the margin, taking a 30-point lead at 18:33, leading 54-24 after four-straight points from Mosley. The Terrapins led by 40 points at 69-29 with 13:37 remaining on two free throws by Gregory. It was a 50-point difference with 9:06 on the clock following a layup that made it 85-35. UM had its largest lead at 106-49 with 1:29 left to play before a late three-pointer by the Lancers provided for the final margin.

Mitchell finished with 15 points, including 13 points in the second half, to lead Longwood. Carter added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Lancers. LU shot 29.2% (19-65) from the field, including 19.2% (5-26) on three-pointers, and 75.0% (9-12) at the free throw line.

Mosley finished with a game-high 20 points to lead Maryland. Terrell Stoglin had 15 points off the bench for the Terrapins. Gregory added a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, Palsson had 13 points off the bench, Pe'Shon Howard contributed 11 points, and Adrian Bowie finished with 10 points. Jordan Williams was limited due to foul trouble while adding nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds as well. UM shot 54.2% (39-72) from the field, including 35.7% (10-28) on three-pointers, and 69.2% (18-26) at the line.

Longwood and Maryland were playing for the second time in two seasons as the Terrapins have now won both games, including last year's 106-55 victory.
