CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 86-53 men's basketball decision on the road at the University of Virginia from the Atlantic Coast Conference Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. The Lancers (3-6) were led by senior
Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 17 points while playing their second game in less than 24 hours after defeating South Carolina State 92-81 Friday night at home. The Cavaliers (7-1) were led by Mike Scott with game highs of 20 points and nine rebounds, and closed the first half with a 23-7 run to lead 43-24 at halftime. Longwood will be idle next week for fall semester examinations before returning to action on Monday, December 12, hosting in-state opponent Virginia Military Institute of the Big South Conference at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m. It will be Military Day against VMI with admission $1 for those with a military ID.
“That's a very good Virginia team we faced this afternoon,” said ninth-year Longwood head coach Mike Gillian. “We got off to a slow start but did a good job playing our way back into the game to trail 20-17 with about eight minutes to go in the first half. From that point on, UVA simply played much better than we did -- thus the final result. We now take a much needed break for final exams before getting back on the court at home against VMI on the 12th.”
Longwood fell behind 14-2 as four different players scored early for Virginia, including three-point field goals from both Scott (19:35) and Sammy Zeglinski (14:07) -- the latter providing for the quick 12-point lead. The Lancers, however, battled back and were within 14-8 at 12:33 following consecutive layups by Carter. The Cavaliers extended their advantage back to 10 points at 20-10 with 11:01 left in the first half before LU scored seven-straight points to pull within 20-17 at 7:09 on a three-pointer from senior
Jan van der Kooij|Tiendeveen, The Netherlands (Roelof van Eckten). UVA, though, would take control with the 23-7 run over the final 6:45 of the half to lead comfortably at the intermission (43-24). Scott scored 11 points to spark the game's decisive minutes just before halftime.
Longwood tried making a push to begin the second half, closing to within 50-33 at 16:43 on a jumper by van der Kooij, and the Lancers were within 53-35 at 15:45 on a basket from sophomore transfer
Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach (La Salle). Virginia responded with a quick 10-2 run to lead 63-37 at 13:21 following a layup by Scott, and the Cavaliers led 74-44 with 7:14 left, taking their largest lead at 84-49 with only 2:01 remaining on the clock.
Carter led Longwood with his 17 points, adding five rebounds. van der Kooij finished with seven points for the Lancers. Senior
Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) and Carey each added six points, and Bowman also had three assists. LU shot 38% (20-53) from the field, including 16% (3-19) on three-pointers, and 77% (10-13) at the free throw line.
Scott led Virginia with his game highs of 20 points and nine rebounds, adding four assists while near perfect shooting on the afternoon (6-6 FG, 1-1 3FG, 7-8 FT). Zieglinski finished with 14 points, seven assists, and three steals for the Cavaliers, while Joe Harris had 13 points that included two dunks in the second half. UVA shot 52% (29-56) from the field, including 32% (6-19) on three-pointers, and 65% (22-34) at the line.
It was the sixth meeting between the two schools in men's basketball, and Virginia has won all six meetings.
The upcoming break this week follows the first nine games of the season over the past 22 days, including five games away from Farmville as Longwood has already traveled to the states of Utah, Nevada, and Illinois.
