Longwood Plays At Vanderbilt Monday Night

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Longwood University returns to action in men's basketball on Monday night, December 19, on the road at Vanderbilt University of the Southeastern Conference at Memorial Gym in Nashville, Tennessee at 8 p.m. ET.  The Lancers of ninth-year head coach Mike Gillian are 4-6 overall for its second-best start to a season since beginning the Division I scheduling with 2004-05.  Senior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) (16.5 points, 8.9 rebounds), along with classmate Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) (14.2 points, 5.6 assists), continue to lead the team this season.  Vanderbilt is coached by Kevin Stallings and is 6-4 while led by junior John Jenkins (20.1 points) and senior Jeffery Taylor (17.0 points).  The game can be heard locally in Farmville on WVHL Radio, 92.9 FM Kickin' Country as well as the Internet via TEAMLINE.

Looking At The Last Game
Longwood jumped out to a 13-2 lead during the first two minutes and led the entire way en route to a 110-89 victory past visiting VMI for its second-straight home win.  The Lancers led by as many as 25 points, and the lead was only less than 20 points one time over the final 15 minutes with all five starters among the six players scoring in double figures.  Tristan Carey led LU with his game-high and career-high 30 points, including a career-high six three-point field goals, adding seven rebounds and six assists.  Martiz Washington finished with a season-high 20 points, tying his career-high with six three-pointers as well, and Jeremiah Bowman added 19 points and nine assists.  The Lancers posted new season highs for points (110), field goals (43), field goal attempts (81), field goal percentage (53.1), three-point field goals (20, school-record), three-point attempts (40, school-record), three-point percentage (50.0), and rebounds (45).  VMI shot 46% (31-68) from the field, including 36% (11-31) on three-pointers, and 84% (16-19) at the line.

Longwood is 4-6 overall for its second-best start to a season since beginning with the Division I scheduling in 2004-05.  The Lancers finest start was 5-5 through 10 games during 2008-09 when the program finished a DI-best 17-14.  Antwan Carter (16.5 points, 8.9 rebounds) continues to lead the Lancers this season.  He has been joined in the lineup by Jeremiah Bowman (14.2 points, 5.6 assists), Tristan Carey (11.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists), Martiz Washington (10.6 points, 25 3FGs), and Jan van der Kooij (6.2 points, 4.7 rebounds).  LU averages 76.0 points while shooting 45% from the field, including 36% on three-point field goals (8.9), and 61% at the line -- allowing opponents 82.6 points.

Head Coach Mike Gillian
Mike Gillian (North Adams State '86) was named the seventh head coach for men's basketball at Longwood on May 2, 2003.  The Ayer, Massachusetts native is 79-174 overall with the Lancers, including 4-6 this season, along with a career-best record of 17-14 during 2008-09 when Gillian earned 2009 Independent Coach of the Year honors from CollegeInsider.com.  He previously had been an assistant coach for current Miami (Fla.) head coach Jim Larranaga while at George Mason for six years (1997-2003) following a year with Coach Larranaga at Bowling Green State (1996-97).

Series History
Longwood and Vanderbilt are meeting for the first time in the sport of men's basketball.  The Lancers are 0-3 all-time against schools from the Southeastern Conference, including road losses at Florida (L 95-69, 1.6.09), Kentucky (L 91-57, 11.24.08), and South Carolina (L 88-58, 1.5.10).  This is also Longwood's first Division I game played in the state of Tennessee.

Vanderbilt of the Southeastern Conference is coached by Kevin Stallings who is in his 13th year with the program, compiling a record of 242-152, including 6-4 this season following a 61-55 home loss to Indiana State (12.17).  John Jenkins (20.1 points, 32 3FGs) and Jeffery Taylor (17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds) have led the Commodores, joined in the lineup by Brad Tinsley (10.3 points, 3.0 assists), Festus Ezeli (9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds), and Rod Odum (3.5 points).  Vanderbilt averages 73.3 points while shooting 45% from the field, including 35% on three-point field goals (8.0), and 66% at the line -- allowing opponents 70.5 points.
