Longwood Ready For Friday/Saturday Action; Lancers Host S.C. State/Travel To Virginia

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University will venture into an unusual Friday night-Saturday afternoon men's basketball doubleheader this weekend, Dec. 2-3.  The Lancers (2-5) will host South Carolina State University (4-3) Friday at Willett Hall in Farmville at 7 p.m., followed by a road game at the University of Virginia (6-1) Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville at 1 p.m.  It'll be a short night and quick turnaround for ninth-year head coach Mike Gillian and his program, led by seniors Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) (16.9 points, 8.7 rebounds) and Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) (15.1 points, 4.9 assists).  It's Holiday Spirit Night on Friday presented by the Farmville Jaycees and Longwood Athletics as general admission is only $1 with a new, unwrapped toy to donate.  The Virginia game will be televised on FOX Sports South available via most digital cable providers, including Shentel locally (CSN-Channel 21), as well as the DIRECTV® (channel 646) satellite network.

Looking At Longwood
Longwood is 2-5 overall as senior center Antwan Carter (16.9 points, 8.7 rebounds) along with classmate and guard Jeremiah Bowman (15.1 points, 4.9 assists) have led the Lancers this season, joined in the lineup by senior guard Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch) (9.1 points, 14 3FGs), sophomore guard Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach (La Salle) (8.6 points, 5.0 rebounds), and senior forward Jan van der Kooij|Tiendeveen, The Netherlands (Roelof van Echten) (4.0 points, 4.1 rebounds).  LU averages 72.1 points while shooting 43% from the field, including 34% on three-point field goals, and 59% at the line -- allowing opponents 81.4 points.

Series History
Longwood is 1-2 all-time against South Carolina State, including a 90-73 win last season during the iBN Sports|Las Vegas Classic at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas (12.23.10).  Antwan Carter led the Lancers with game highs of 30 points and 10 rebounds.  Omar Sanders had 14 points for the Bulldogs.  LU is 0-5 all-time against Virginia, including an 85-72 loss in its most recent meeting in Charlottesville to open 2009-10 (11.13.09) -- also Tony Bennett's first game as the Cavaliers head coach.  Antwan Carter led the Lancers with 18 points.  Sammy Zeglinski had 14 points, while Mike Scott added a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Cavaliers.

Looking At South Carolina State
South Carolina State of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is coached by Tim Carter who is in his fifth year with the program, compiling a record of 62-73, including 4-3 this season after an 85-54 home loss to Georgia State (11.29).  Senior guard Brandon Riley (20.8 points, 11 3FGs), classmate and forward Omar Sanders (13.3 points, 7.8 rebounds), and junior guard Khalif Toombs (12.0 points, 3.4 assists) have led the Bulldogs, joined in the lineup by senior forward/center Presano Bell (8.3 points, 6.6 rebounds) and junior guard/forward Aaron Martin (8.3 points).  SCSU averages 65.4 points while shooting 40% from the field, including 31% on three-point field goals, and 63% at the line -- allowing opponents 71.3 points.

Looking At Virginia
Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference is coached by Tony Bennett who is in his third year with the program, compiling a record of 37-32, including 6-1 this season after a 70-58 home win past Michigan (11.29).  Senior forward Mike Scott (15.3 points, 10.1 rebounds) and sophomore guard Joe Harris (12.6 points, 12 3FGs) have led the Cavaliers, joined in the lineup by senior center Assane Sene (5.9 points), junior guard Jontel Evans (6.1 points, 2.7 assists), and senior guard Sammy Zeglinski (6.2 points).  UVA averages 63.7 points while shooting 45% from the field, including 33% on three-point field goals, and 78% at the line -- allowing opponents only 47.1 points.
